The Department of Marketing Management (DMM) of the University of Kelaniya, signed an MOU with Marina Foods (Pvt) Ltd on 04th May 2017 at the Senate Room of the University. With this MOU, Marina Foods (Pvt) Ltd comes on board as a strategic partner of DMM. The MOU mainly focuses on the Certified Professional Marketing Graduate (CPMG) qualification of DMM and Marina Foods (Pvt) Ltd becomes an industry partner in recognizing the graduates who obtain the qualification requirements through the agreement.

The event was graced with the presence of Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, the Vice Chancellor – the University of Kelaniya, Dr. P.N.D. Fernando – the Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Dr. Ajith Medis – the Head, Department of Marketing Management, Mr. N. M. Manjula Narayana- the Management Director – Marina Foods (Pvt) Ltd, Mr. Denzil Perera- the Deputy General Manager – Marketing – Marina Foods (Pvt) Ltd, Mr. Don Gratian – the Chief Human Resources Officer – Marina Foods (Pvt) Ltd. Also the members of the academic and non-academic staff of Department of Marketing Management and its undergraduates participated in this event.

Joining hands with Manusath Derana "Nature Force" Project, the Alumni Association of Department of Marketing Management, University of Kelaniya initiated a tree plantation project in the University on 22nd March 2017 with the participation of newly appointed vice chancellor Prof. D.M. Semasinghe.  Head of the Department of Marketing Management Dr. Ajith Medis, Director of Suitable Development Center Dr. U.P.K Epa, Manusath Derana Project Chairman Mr. Mahesh Jayawardena and other distinguish guests.

According to the third phase of one million tree plantation project , it would be a community-wide initiative to inspire all the universities to plant trees at the University premises and the initiative has been taken by Alumni Association of Department of Marketing Management, University of Kelaniya to coordinate and implement this project across all the national universities in Sri Lanka.

The Department of Marketing Management (DMM) of the University of Kelaniya, signed an MOU with Nestlé Lanka Plc and the official ceremony to exchange the MoU between the two parties was recently held at University of Kelaniya.  With this MOU, Nestlé Lanka Plc comes on board as a strategic partner of DMM. This event was graced by the presence of Dr. Ajith Medis, Head – Department of Marketing Management, University of Kelaniya, the academic staff of DMM and from Nestlé Lanka Plc: Ms. Enoca Sirimanne, Vice-President Human Resources, Mr. Shanaka Wijeweera, Senior Manager – Learning & Training, Ms. Erosha Fernando, Assistant Manager – Human Resources Business Excellence.

DMM is a dynamic academic unit in the university system of Sri Lanka which focuses on crafting strategists to the industry. In its path of crafting strategists, DMM gives priority to academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities of the students. Undergraduates of the department has a greater exposure towards the industry and the department takes necessary actions to bring in wider spectrum of knowledge in its curriculum. DMM is unique among the other departments in the university system because it offers two diplomas (Diploma in People Skills and Diploma in Enterprise Resource Planning) to its undergraduates, in addition to the Bachelor of Business Management (Special) Degree in Marketing. An undergraduate who excels in all three programmes will be uniquely tagged as a “Certified Professional Marketing Graduate” (CPMG)”. CPMG accreditation will be done through an academic cum industry membership programme which will enable to make a branded graduate and facilitate lifelong learning.

With this MOU Nestlé Lanka Plc is coming onboard as  a CPMG Industry Partner not only in recognising graduates who are eligible for Certified Professional Marketing Graduate (CPMG) of DMM but also  as the delivery partner of Diploma in People Skills. Nestlé Lanka will facilitate the delivery and assessments of the second level of the Diploma in People Skills for DMM undergraduates at their company premises, using their human resources. This year sessions of the Diploma in People Skills commenced on 31st March 2017 for the best selected 30 undergraduates at Nestlé Lanka premises.

Student Research Conference in Marketing organized by the Department of Marketing Management, the University of Kelaniya for the second consecutive year was held on 16th February 2017 at the University of Kelaniya under the theme “Emerging paradigms of marketing value creation”. The prime objective of the annual conference is to inculcate research culture among the undergraduates of the department whilst increasing the quality of the research output. The final year students graduating in the year 2017 presented their research work from the dissertations which is a compulsory course module of the Bachelor of Business Management (Special) Degree in Marketing. All together 92 undergraduates were awarded certificates for their research work. 

The event was graced by Prof D M Semasinghe, Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Prof M J S Wijeyaratne, Senior Professor and Chair Professor of Zoology, and the Chairman of the Research Council, Dr Ajith Medis, Head, Department of Marketing Management and academic members of the department. Mr Sharang Pant, Managing Director, Nielsen’s Sri Lanka delivered the Keynote Speech at the conference.

Understanding the significance and the unfilled gap prevailing in Service Marketing in Sri Lanka, The Department of Marketing Management of University of Kelaniya in collaboration with The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM) organized “Corporate Dialogue 2017 – The Industry Forum of the Year” headed by Prof. A. Parasuraman – the world renowned Service Marketing Guru who co-founded the SERVQUAL model highly used in Service Marketing worldwide on 26th of January, 2017 at Galle Face Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The forum was organized in line with the International Conference on Advanced Marketing (ICAM 2017) held on 26-27 January, 2017. This is for the very first time that this living legend in Service Marketing visited Sri Lanka, and it this special forum comprised of several insights to meet the unmet expectations of clients regardless of the type of industry.

Together with Prof. A. Parasuraman, Mr. Sulaiman Salim bin Al-Kaabi – CEO of Etisalat Telecommunication Company, Mr. Love Yadev, CEO of Amana Global and Mr. Ravi Bamunusinghe, Managing Director of Research Consultancy Bureau also contributed as forum panelists and, this was moderated by Mr. Ravi Jayawardena – CEO, Sales and Marketing of Maliban Biscuits, Sri Lanka. More than 150 attendees took part in this forum representing various business organizations in Sri Lanka.

The grandest celebration of this winter tide, Signature Stylish Marketer 2016 concluded successfully on the 15th of December 2016 at the University of Kelaniya. Stylish Marketer is the annual fashion extravaganza organized by the Future Marketers Association, the official student association of the Department of Marketing Management, University of Kelaniya with the objective of improving the soft skills of its undergraduates. Apart from the academic curriculum undergraduates were believed to gain vast exposure and develop leadership skills, event management skills, planning, communication and negotiation skills.

Being fashion’s most glamorous eve, the event attracted the attention of an enormous crowd, where the audience was mesmerized by not only with the ravishing performances of the contestants, but also with the enthusiastic live performances by the veteran violinist, Dinesh Subasinghe and the exquisite vocalists Umaria Sinhawansa and Dushyanth Weeraman.

The event was graced by Prof. Sunanda Maddumabandara, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya as the chief guest, and Mr Fouzul Hameed, the Managing Director of Hameedia group as the guest of honor and many more respected dignitaries from the industry of fashion and the corporate sector.

Judges Ms. Kasthuri Chellaraja (Managing Director of Hemas Pharmaceutical Pvt Ltd), Ms. Sandhya Salgadu (Independent Director of Seylan Bank and a Council Member of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura), Mr. Rashmika Pieris (business director at Linea Intimo, attached to MAS Holdings pvt Ltd), Ms. Harshani Ruman (Miss Sri Lanka for Miss Earth 2015, second runner up, Miss Tourism Universe 2015 second runner up, and Miss Grand Sri Lanka 2016), Ms. Kameel Hewawitharana (a designer for beauty queens and top models, and has judged the international best male and female model in Spain), Mr. Jereld Solomon (a veteran in the hairdressing industry), judged the show’s contestants along with Mr. Faizal Bongzo as host.

The contest was illuminated with the flawless glamour of queens and emperors adorned with charming attires, designed by the contestants of the design competition who had cleaved their way towards the grand finale of the Signature Stylish Marketer 2016.

Burnishing the moment of glory, the reigning titleholders of Stylish Marketer, Pavani Withanage of the Department of Accountancy, University of Kelaniya and Isanka Amarasinghe of the Department of Commerce and Financial Management of the University of Kelaniya were crowned by the outgoing titleholders, Salini Perera of the Department of Marketing Management, University of Kelaniya and Dilan Dakshina of Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya.

he Department of Marketing Management of the University of Kelaniya in collaboration with Future Marketers Association conducted a Forum on Sustainable Marketing with the theme of “Youth Encounter on Sustainable Marketing” on 11th of November 2016.

Mr. Dinesh Hamangoda, Marketing Manager, Holcim Lanka Ltd, Mr. Raskia Gunawardana, Assistant Manager – Group Sustainability, Hayleys PLC, Mr. Annurudda Gamage, Senior Manager HR & Corporate Sustainability, Kelani Valley Plantations PLC, Mr. Sivaram Kulendran, Head – Business Operations, Hayleys Agriculture Holdings Ltd and Mr. Suranga Chandana, Manager – Quality Assurance, Rileys Private Limited shared their insights on sustainable marketing practices of their respective firms while discussing the issues and challenges of practicing sustainability from the marketing perspective. The members of the Future Marketers Association acted as the panel members of the discussion forum.

This forum was organised alongside the module on “Sustainable Marketing” of the Bachelor of Business Management (Special) Degree in Marketing and the main objective was to build a platform for undergraduates to learn from the industry practitioners on the new developments from organizational perspectives. Dr. W.M.C.B. Wanninayake, Head, Department of Marketing Management, Academic Members of the Department and undergraduates participated in the forum.

The Department of Marketing Management (DMM) of the University of Kelaniya, signed an MOU with Unilever Sri Lanka Limited on 04th November 2016. With this MOU, Unilever Sri Lanka Limited comes on board as a strategic partner of DMM. The MOU mainly focuses on the Certified Professional Marketing Graduate (CPMG) qualification of DMM and Unilever Sri Lanka is becoming an Industry Partner in recognizing the graduates who obtain the qualification requirements through the agreement. CPMG is a joint academic cum industry membership programme which will allow DMM and the CPMG partner/s to accredit graduates of highest caliber to be designated as CPMGs leading to branded graduates plus facilitate lifelong learning. This MOU will provide internship opportunities to the DMM undergraduates of the University of Kelaniya at the Unilever.

The Marketing Department and Future Marketers Association of the University of Kelaniya organised a soft skills and entrepreneurship development workshop which was held on the 22nd of June 2016 at the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. While the main lecture was conducted by popular artist Bhathiya Jayakodi, the Head of the Department of Marketing Dr. D.M.C.B Wanninayaka, academic staff members and undergraduates participated in the workshop.

Soft Skills Development workshop was held in order to enhance the Skills and Motivation among 1st year undergraduates of Department of Marketing Management on 27th of May 2016, at the Faculty Auditorium. The workshop was conducted by Mr Dilantha Malagamuwa who is the best known international racing driver who has been “Racing with Pride for Sri Lanka” in many countries by wining many races and claimed many more podium finishes in racing arena. The session was organized Mr. Thilina Dk, Coordinator of the Soft Skills Development Programme.

The inauguration ceremony of the “Diploma in Marketing – 2016” conducted by the Department of Marketing Management was held on the 20th of March 2016 at the auditorium of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. While the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies preceded the event, the keynote address was delivered by the General Manager of Sales and Marketing at MBSL Insurance Company, Mr. Induka Senanayake. The faculty members of the Department of Marketing Management and those enrolled in the Diploma Programme also participated in this event.

The inauguration ceremony for the second batch of the Diploma in People Skills conducted by the Department of Marketing Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management studies was held on 11th March 2016 at the faculty premises. The inauguration of the programme was presided over by Dr. Bandara Wanninayake, Head of the Department of Marketing Management while Mr. Mahesh Jayasinghe, Managing Director of Mpower Soft Skills (Pvt.) Limited addressed the gathering to highlight the value of soft skills for undergraduates. The faculty members of the department and the students of the diploma programme also participated in this event.

Department of Marketing Management recognizes the prominence of developing the soft skills of its internal undergraduates in molding them into industry required graduates. Diploma in People Skills is delivered in collaboration with recognized industry resource personnel and business organizations.

The inauguration ceremony of Masters in Business and Management (MBM) in Marketing, offered by the Faculty of Commerce and Management studies, University of Kelaniya was held on 13th March, 2016 at the auditorium of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies.

The ceremony was presided over by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sunanda Madduma Bandara. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Dilith Jayaweera, Managing Director of Triad (Pvt) Ltd. The Senior Lecturer of the Department of Marketing, Mr. Ajith Medis spoke at the ceremony. The Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies Dr. D.M. Semasinghe, the Faculty staff and the graduate students were also present at this occasion.
