For decades, postgraduate education in general management had three letters – Master of Business Administration (MBA). However, since the early 2000s, a new degree emerged on the academic landscape of European business schools and has increasingly been picked up by US schools – Master in Management, sometimes called MIM/MBM programs.

Department of Marketing Management (DMM) of the University of Kelaniya, as a responsible academic body, introduced the MBM in Marketing programme in the year 2015 They introduced MBMM as the next step of the Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing programme they had been running successfully over the years. Since the introduction of the MBMM, DMM has received a lot of recognition from the industry and the other higher educational institutes for their high-quality standards in programme design, teaching, and learning. As an ISO 9001-2015 certified department. DMM takes timely measures to revise its curriculums to keep abreast with modern business dynamics. Further, marketing management has become a critical part of the modern business over the years

You Can’t Go Wrong Either Way

The differences between MBA and MBM programs aren’t as vast as you might think. Students enrolled in the two programs will take many of the same courses and graduate well-versed in areas like leadership, ethics, and decision-making. Yet MBM is a worthy investment for professionals who are at an early stage of their carrier ladder and who looking forward to craft knowledge in the Management domain

In the past years, MBM degrees have been rising in popularity in Europe, but also in Asia, Australia, and Canada. 85% of all worldwide Masters in Management are offered in Europe, especially thanks to the changes brought by the implementation of the Bologna process.

The rising popularity is also supported by the fact that most MBM degrees are designed for an international student audience, with courses offered in English. Some of the main subjects discussed during classes are management theory, organizational behaviour, and other aspects of the business world.
When considering which degree to pursue in the field of business, it is important to note the similarities between them. Both degrees cover similar topics such as organizational behavior, strategic management, financial analysis, and marketing. However, while there may be overlap in subject matter between a Master's in Business Administration (MBA) and a Master's Business Management (MBM), it is also essential to consider their differing focuses. An MBA program typically emphasizes leadership skills and decision-making abilities within a broader range of industries.
On the other hand, an MBM tends to focus on preparing students for management roles within specific fields or organizations. Despite these differences in focus and application, both programs require strong analytical skills and an ability to think critically about complex problems. Ultimately, the choice between pursuing an MBA or MBM will depend on individual goals and preferences.

MBM is at "SLQF Level 10"

What is SLQF?

Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) is a new framework aimed at improving quality of higher education and training through recognizing and accrediting qualifications offered by different institutions. It identifies different levels to which the qualifications offered in the entire higher education sector in Sri Lanka are included. It helps to interpret qualifications and judge the relative value of a qualification. This enables the learners to make informed decisions about the qualifications they intend to acquire.

The SLQF identifies the broad levels of competencies that are expected from the holders of different qualifications. The minimum entry requirements for each qualification and the possible route of progression are also identified in the SLQF. This will facilitate the credit transfer and helps in the combination of qualifications as well as progression within the higher education system. It combines school, vocational education and higher education sectors.
