The first-ever International Student Research Conference in Marketing organized by the Department of Marketing Management with the collaboration of the University of Szczecinski, Poland, and Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education- a deemed to be university in India was held on the 25th of February at the university premises.

It was successfully conducted with the virtual presence of the Chief guest for the day, Dr. P.N.D Fernando, the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Chair of the conference Mr. Wasantha Kumara,  Secretary of the conference Mr. Thilina DK, Head of the Department of Marketing Management Dr. Ravi Dissanayake, the Keynote speaker of the conference Prof. Dharshana Sedara, lecturers and Final year presenters from all 3 University partners.

The Department of Marketing Management (DMM) of the University of Kelaniya, signed an MoU with Round Table Sri Lanka (RTSL) on the 11th of February 2021 at the University of Kelaniya. With this MoU, RTSL now comes on board as one of the delivery partners of the Diploma in People Skills (DPS) offered by DMM. 

The Diploma in People Skills is a unique program launched by the Department of Marketing Management, the University of Kelaniya in 2014 with the purpose of motivating the students to achieve greater heights in both their professional and personal lives. It takes the undergraduates through a carefully designed process of enhancing skills and transforming attitudes. This collaboration is surely another step in that process that makes DMM undergraduates readily employable. 

The event was graced with the presence of Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor- University of Kelaniya, Dr.P. N. D. Fernando, Dean- Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Dr. Ravi Dissanayake, Head – Department of Marketing Management, Mr. Uditha Bandara, Coordinator – Diploma in People Skills, Faculty Members, Mr. Vivek Sundaralingam – President- Round Table Sri Lanka and the Round Tablers of Mr. Tharindu Amarasinghe Mr. Gimhan Sumanasekara

The inauguration ceremony of the Higher Diploma in Marketing Programme, offered by the Department of Marketing Management of the Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies was successfully held on 09th of January 2021 an online platform via Zoom. This is the 06th intake of Higher Diploma in Marketing. Dr. P.N.D.Fernando, the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies, Dr. D.M.R. Dissanayake, Head of the Department of Marketing Management, Mr. Nisal Gunawardane, the coordinator of the Higher Diploma in Marketing Programme, academic staff members of the Department of Marketing Management and new students participated the event. The Keynote Speech was delivered by Dr. Anil Munasinghe, General Manager (Marketing), Kelani Cables. The importance of pursuing education qualifications in parallel with their industry experience was highlighted in his speech

A webinar on “Excellence in Planning” was conducted for the students of the Diploma in People Skills programme of the Department of Marketing Management of the University of Kelaniya on the 18th of December 2020 on the Zoom platform. This webinar's resource panel consisted of Mr Gimhan Sumanasekera, Senior Project Manager at ISM APAC (Pvt) Ltd, Mr Lahiru Wijerathna - General Manager at Modern Pack Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, and Mr Vajeendra Kannangara, Marketing Manager at Ceylon Theaters.

Starting off the year with wonderful news, it is with great honor we announce that our Head of the Department, Dr. Ravi Dissanayake, senior lecturer, Miss. Shanika Wijenayake and senior lecturer Mr. Nisal Gunawardane were awarded Vice Chancellor’s Award for their internationally recognized publications!

Senior Lecturer Dr. Ravi Dissanayake & Senior Lecturer Ms. Shanika Wijenayake, Department of Marketing Management received Senate Awards which are offered to appreciate the researchers of University of Kelaniya who publish in internationally recognized journals on 25th November 2020. 

Dr. Dissanayke received the senate awards for his publication “Critical Success Factors for Performance-Oriented M-Learning in Sri Lanka” which is published in the Journal of Educational and Social Research. It is a SCOPUS indexed journal with an impact factor of 0.675. 

Ms. Wijenayake received the senate awards for two of her recent publications in indexed journals. The publication “A study on factors influencing online behavioral advertising avoidance (Oba): Special reference to Sri Lankan online advertising” is published in the journal - Management Science Letters which is SCOPUS indexed and the other is “Supervisor and Customer-Driven Stressors to Predict Silence and Voice Motives: Mediating and Moderating Roles of Anger and Self-Control” which is published in Services Marketing Quarterly (impact factor: 0.8)

The Department of Marketing Management (DMM) commenced the strategy execution module for the students of the Diploma in People Skills (DPS) of 2017/2018 batch on the 11th of December 2020 via the Zoom platform. The Round Table Sri Lanka delivers this module. The 1st session on  “Problem Solving” was conducted by Mr. Vivek Sundaralingam- the President of RTSL and an Entrepreneur at Metro City Hotels & Ramya Group of Companies, Mr. Danushka Jayasinghe- Head of Logistics Technology Solutions at ITX360 (Pvt) Ltd and Mr. Chamishka Kirielle- Marketing Manager of ZILLIONe Systems Solutions (Pvt) Ltd. Dr. Ravi Dissanayake, Head - Department of Marketing Management, Mr. S. Uditha Bandara, Coordinator - Diploma in People Skills and other faculty members were also present at the session.

“Great Minds” organized by the Future Marketers Association of University of Kelaniya successfully held its first ever session for the year 2020 with the outstanding, influential leader, Ms. Kasturi Chellaraja on the 20th of November Via Zoom with the participation of the head of the department Dr. Ravi Dissanayake, lecturers of the department and students from all batches of the Department of Marketing Management.

Ms. Kasturi is the first female group CEO of a public quoted conglomerate in Sri Lanka and was named as one of the top twelve women change makers in the country in 2019 by the Parliament of Sri Lanka and USAID. Being a fearless, tough and go-getter character she is, Ms. Kasturi spoke about how one can perform and succeed in a challenging corporate environment. The session was insightful as well as inspiring to many as she shared her story towards success and how she faced barriers fearlessly with an open mind. Towards the end of the discussion she answered many questions asked by the participants leaving them all motivated to develop themselves and always thrive in becoming a better person every day.

The Diploma Awarding Ceremony of Diploma in People Skills (DPS) and Diploma in Enterprise Resource Planning (DERP) offered by Department of Marketing Management, University of Kelaniya was held on 9th September 2020 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. DERP and DPS are offered to the undergraduates of the Department of Marketing Management parallel to the degree programme. Prime objective of this innovative initiation is to make the graduates readily employable in the right employment. Specifically, DPS aims at inculcating the right attitude in undergraduates and Nestle Lanka PLC and Unilever Sri Lanka are the main strategic partners in this programme. DERP is a result of the SAP University Alliance Partnership of the Department of Marketing Management which aims at developing IT skills of the undergraduates and attune Consulting is the main delivery partner.

 The Annual General Meeting of the Future Marketers Association (FMA) was successfully held on 2 nd of September, 2020 at the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies auditorium with the presence of the Head of the Department of Marketing Management- Dr. Ravi Dissanayake, panel of lecturers at DMM, former board members and Department undergraduates. The Meeting commenced with the gathering been officially welcomed and former board members taking seats at the head table. Following a video bringing back the eventful memories from the past year, the outgoing secretary, Ms. Gimhani Ekanayake read the minutes of the previous meeting, which was then approved by two participants from the last year’s meeting. Ms.Gimhani also extended her gratitude to the lecturers and all other individuals who guided and supported her throughout her term of work.
