Department of Accountancy, University of Kelaniya Signed an MoU with the Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Sri Lanka (CMA)

The Department of Accountancy, University of Kelaniya signed an MoU with the Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Sri Lanka (CMA) on 25^th February 2022 at the University of Kelaniya. The ultimate aim of this MoU is to enhance the professional recognition of Bachelor of Business Management Honours in Accountancy degree programme and Bachelor of Business Management Honours in Auditing and Forensic Accounting degree programme while offering scholarships and exemptions to DoA undergraduates to follow the CMA Professional Management Accounting programme. Further, through this MoU both institutions envisage to promote collaborative research work in the field of Management Accounting.  

An MoU was signed between the University of Kelaniya and Colombo Stock Exchange on 02^nd December 2021 with the aim of appreciating and nurturing the Bachelor of Business Management Honours in Accountancy degree program while promoting collaborative research work between both institutions by capitalizing their integrative strengths. In essence, both institutions envisage to derive synergistic benefits out of their expertise knowledge. Accordingly, the MoU was signed with the participation of Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kelaniya, Dr. Narada Fernando, Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Prof. Dilrukshi Yapa Abeywardhana, Head, Department of Accountancy, Mr. Rajeeva Bandaranaike, Chief Executive Officer of Colombo Stock Exchange, Mr. Nishantha Hewavithana, Head of Research and Strategy, Colombo Stock Exchange, Professors, Senior Lecturers and Lecturers of the Department of Accountancy.

MoU signing ceremony was held on 22nd February 2021 with the participation of Senior Prof. Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kelaniya, Dr. Narada Fernando, Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Dr. Kamal Tilakasiri, Head, Department of Accountancy, Mr. Brian Gourdian, President, The Institute of Internal Auditors, Sri Lanka Chapter, Professors, Senior Lecturers and Lecturers of Department of Accountancy.

The objective of signing this MoU is to promote and nurture Auditing and Forensic Accounting education, practice and the Auditing and Forensic Accounting profession of Sri Lanka by capitalizing institutional strengths of both institutions. In essence, both institutions envisage to derive synergistic benefits of human and physical resources.

Department of Accountancy, University of Kelaniya signed an MoU with Ernst and Young, Chartered Accountants

Department of Accountancy, University of Kelaniya signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ernst and Young, Chartered Accountants on 12 February 2015 paving the way for mutually beneficial cooperation between the two institutions in a range of areas, including academic and professional development of human capital, providing internship opportunities, organizing workshops for enhancing students’ soft skills and seminars for disseminating contemporary issues in Accounting and Auditing and extended support for continuous professional development.

This MoU was signed by Prof. Sunanda Madduma Bandara, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya and Mr. Ruwan Fernando, Partner, Ernst and Young with the presence of Dr.D.M.Semasinghe, Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Dr.M.W.Madurapperuma, Head, Department of Accountancy and Mr.Devaka Coorey, Partner and Head of Talents, Ernst and Young.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Madurapperuma stated that “ the presence of collaboration between one of the BIG-3 Global Audit firms and presented the implementation of activities stated in the MoU signed”.

Mr. Devaka Cooray emphasized ‘value-addition and exposure obtained by the trainees working in  Global Audit firms eventually lead to market talents of young qualified individuals in overseas operation and to obtain competitive 6-figure salaries’.

Accredited as the largest and fastest growing global professional accountancy body, The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Sri Lanka, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Kelaniya recently.

The accounting profession today goes beyond numbers and balance sheets to a more holistic experience with its grip on business management and growth. In an attempt to assist our society in this endeavour, ACCA has recognised the importance of widening its reach to local university students and enhancing their skills to better cater to the needs of the current business arena.

The MOU places emphasis on the two educational bodies collaborating in the areas of professional accountancy training, education, examinations and continuing professional development.

Further, the MOU, which constitutes knowledge sharing, will give opportunities and invite and permit the participation of members of ACCA and the University of Kelaniya to take part in conferences, seminars, training programmes and workshops. These will be organized on areas of common interest and will be of mutual benefit to both ACCA and the University.They will also disseminate information in collaboration with each other, to students about the accounting profession and the opportunities available to accounting professionals.

Both ACCA and the University of Kelaniya expressed their confidence in the association between the University and ACCA. They both strongly believe those new beginnings such as MOU's where recognized professional accounting bodies join hands to impart their knowledge to students and the youth will be one of the key steps to undertake in contributing to the progress of the accounting profession and the key role that accountants will play in businesses in the future.

Professor Sarath Amunugama, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kelaniya emphasized that "Students will join research and knowledge exchange not just in the country but regionally and globally. It will be an opportunity for the ACCA and the university to strengthen our support of the accounting profession both in Sri Lanka and regionally.

Dr. Wasanthi Madurapperuma, Head, Department of Accountancy, University of Kelaniya said that the signing of the MOU "marks the beginning of an even stronger relationship between both organisations". This MOU covered a number of initiatives ranging from academic activities to many collaborative initiatives. Further she said that initiating faculty-industry partnership and strategic international partnerships with premier institutions are among the faculties' top priorities. Eventually outcomes of this MOU will accelerate "human-resource development and help to produce a highly skilled and productive workforce for the country".

Ms.Nilusha Ranasinghe, Head of ACCA Sri Lanka stated "Today accountants have a major role to play in businesses both locally and internationally and therefore they have to equip themselves with the latest knowledge in their respective fields of expertise. Accountants have played a supportive role in the past, which needs to be changed by asserting themselves by becoming 'Knowledge Leaders' to spearhead the transformation of today's businesses. Therefore the main objective of this MOU is to give the right opportunities to the future finance professionals in our endeavor to uplift the standard of this profession in the country."

The University of Kelaniya (UoK) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) recently entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which aims at developing and promoting the accounting education and the profession in the country.

The MoU was signed by Vice Chancellor of the Kelaniya University Prof. Sarath Amunugama and CA Sri Lanka President Mr. Sujeewa Rajapakse.

The primary objective of the agreement is to help promote and nurture the accounting education, practice and the accounting profession of Sri Lanka by capitalizing on the institutional strengths of both institutions.

The MoU will facilitate the designing and offering of a Bachelor of Business Management Accountancy (General) degree programme accredited by the UoK which will be delivered through the distance learning mode, subject to the approval of the Council of CA Sri Lanka and the Senate of the UoK.

The Department of Accounting (DoA) of the Kelaniya University will also offer placements on its Master of Business in Accounting/ Master of Business in Finance post-graduate degree programmes to CA Sri Lanka members, subject to the approval of the Council.

The agreement will allow both UoK and CA Sri Lanka to jointly design and implement continuous professional development programmes for the benefit of the institute members, academics and students.

The MoU will also promote activities between the DoA’s Student Association (ASAK) and CA Sri Lanka’s student body (CA Students Society) to jointly organize an annual accounting forum and to conduct career guidance workshops for the students. The DoA and CA Sri Lanka will also jointly develop research projects and organize an Annual Research Conference.
