HR Impelz’24: Inspiring Creativity, Leadership, and Teamwork

The HR IMPELZ, organized by the Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with the AHEAD Students& Association, was successfully conducted on the 21st of November, 2024, at the Cyber Ground, University of Kelaniya. This sports day brought together students from all four years for a day filled with teamwork, creativity, and sportsmanship centred around the theme, "Cultures in
Combat." The event was graced by the presence of esteemed guests, including Professor Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies; Professor Kamal Thilakasiri, Senior Student Counsellor of the Faculty; Dr. Saroja Wanigasekara, Head of the Department; and the honoured panel of lecturers of the department. HR Impelz& was a special event, combining sports, creativity, leadership, and teamwork into one unforgettable experience. Students participated in team-building games, which encouraged collaboration. They were also able to showcase their creativity through activities such as designing houses, badges, and dance, all in line with the theme. HR Impelz’24 was a day to remember, filled with creativity, unity, and fun. It perfectly captured the theme “Cultures in Combat” and left everyone with lasting memories. The event highlighted the spirit of the Department of Human Resource Management, the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, and the generous support of People’s Bank and Ceylon Biscuit Limited (CBL), marking a wonderful moment for the HRM community at the University of Kelaniya.

Horizon 360: A Transformative Workshop Series


The AHEAD Students Association of the Department of Human Resource Management at the University of Kelaniya recently hosted an impactful workshop series to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge to succeed in an ever-evolving world. This initiative brought together renowned experts to deliver transformative sessions focused on conquering challenges, Artificial Intelligence, mindfulness, and teamwork, setting the stage for a future of leadership and personal growth.
The event commenced with an inspiring session titled “Conquering Challenges and Building Discipline” conducted by Mr. Dilantha Malagamuwa, Sri Lanka's legendary racing driver on 14 th October 2024. Drawing from his own experiences on and off the track, Mr. Malagamuwa engaged the audience with insights into resilience, perseverance, and the discipline required to excel under pressure. His stories served as a testament to the importance of mental and emotional strength in facing life hurdles.
 The second session, led by Dr. Chathura Rajapakse on 21 st October 2024, focused on the rising topic of " Artificial Intelligence ". Participants gained valuable insights into the transformative effects of AI, exploring its impact on industries, daily life, and the future of work. This impactful session highlighted the importance of staying informed and adaptable to thrive in a dynamic world.
Mindfulness and well-being took center stage in the third workshop led by Mr. Bhathiya
Arthanayake on 24 th October 2024. His session on “Mindfulness” provided participants with practical techniques to manage stress, improve focus, and foster emotional balance. In today’s fast-paced environment, Mr. Arthanayake's guidance on cultivating a mindful mindset resonated deeply, offering valuable lessons on enhancing personal and professional well-being. The series concluded with a high-energy session on “Teamwork” by Mr. Sumendra Jayaram, an acclaimed corporate trainer. The session was held on 29 th October 2024. With interactive activities and real-world scenarios, Mr. Jayaram demonstrated the significance of collaboration and effective communication in achieving shared goals. The workshop emphasized that teamwork is the backbone of any successful venture and highlighted strategies to foster unity and cohesion within diverse groups. The Horizon 360 workshop series concluded successfully with the aforementioned events. It was not just a series of workshops but a transformative experience designed to nurture the next generation of leaders. The AHEAD Students' Association continues to elevate student- led projects by fostering a culture of development, collaboration, and quality.

Inauguration Ceremony 2024 - Higher Diploma in HRM

We successfully concluded the Inauguration Ceremony of the 10th Batch of the Higher Diploma in HRM today! ?✨

It was an honor to have Prof. Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management, as our Chief Guest, and Mr. Sumendra Jayaram, General Manager - Training & Development at Softlogic Life Insurance, as our keynote speaker. His inspiring words left a lasting impact on everyone present. ?

A special thanks to Dr. Saroja Wanigasekara, Head of the Department of HRM, and Dr. Chathuni Jayasinghe, Coordinator of the HDHRM program, for their contributions. A big thank you to all our distinguished guests, faculty, and students for making this event truly memorable!

AHEAD Annual General Meeting

The AHEAD Students' Association of the Department of Human Resource Management at the University of Kelaniya held its Annual General Meeting on August 7, 2024, at the Faculty Auditorium. The event was attended by the Head of the Department, Senior Lecturer Dr. Saroja Wanigasekara, and other faculty members. The primary focus of the meeting was the appointment of the new executive board for the 2024/25 term. The ceremony began with traditional oil lamp lighting, followed by an inspiring speech from Dr. Wanigasekara, who praised the outgoing AHEAD team.
A highlight of the meeting was the launch of HR Odyssey 2.0, the association’s annual magazine, showcasing the achievements of the 2023/24 term. Reports from the outgoing Secretary and Treasurer provided a transparent overview of the association’s activities. Outgoing leaders, including Senior Treasurer Ms. Madhavee Gunesekara and President Mohomad Raqeeb, were honored for their contributions.
The meeting also featured a video presentation highlighting the association’s projects and recognized active members with appreciation certificates. The new Senior Treasurer, Ms. Vimansha Ranasinghe, and President, Tharusha Jayarathne, were appointed, with both expressing their commitment to continuing AHEAD's legacy of excellence.

The inauguration ceremony for the Master of Human Resource Management 2024

The inauguration ceremony for the Master of Human Resource Management 2024-Batch 17th took place on the 13th of June 2024, at Marino Beach Hotel, Colombo 03. The occasion commenced with a warm welcome delivered by the Head of the Department of Human Resource Management, Senior Lecturer, Dr. Saroja Wanigasekara.
The event featured addresses by several distinguished guests:
the Guest of Honour, Professor Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies at the University of Kelaniya; the Special Guest, Senior Professor N.A.K.P.J. Seneviratne, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Kelaniya; and the Chief Guest, Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya. Additionally, the Guest Speaker, Mr. Chamara D. Jayaweera, Managing Director and Co-founder of Itechro Private Limited, shared valuable insights with the attendees.The ceremony concluded with a gracious vote of thanks from the Academic Coordinator of the Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM) Program, Dr. W.A.S. Weerakkody. The event was further enhanced by the presence of faculty members from the Department of Human Resource Management, who contributed to the success and vibrancy of the occasion.

HR 3Ds - 2024

The HR 3Ds Extravaganza titled this year as C- මයිනස්, unfolded magnificently at the Tower Hall Theater, organized by the AHEAD Student’s Association of the Department of Human Resources Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya. Renowned musician and composer Dr. Rohana Weerasinghe, actresses Ms. Senali Fonseka and Ms. Tharindi Fernando, and actor, former HRM department alumnus Mr. Hashan Rathnayake graced the event as chief guests. Adding to the prestige, Professor Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Senior Lecturer Dr. Saroja Wanigasekara, Head of the Department, and singer Indika Ruwan (Roony) joined as special invitees. The Senior Treasurer of the AHEAD Students’ Association, Senior Lecturer Ms. Madhavi Gunasekara, and the esteemed lecture panel were also in attendance, contributing to the success of the occasion.The essence of C- මයිනස් was to showcase campus life in an exemplary manner, reflecting an A+ standard. Months of meticulous planning and tireless efforts from undergraduates culminated in a theatrical experience that moved audiences to both laughter and tears. More than just an event, C- මයිනස් encapsulated the emotions and aspirations of all undergraduates, providing them a platform to express their talents beyond academic pursuits and nurturing their emotional intelligence. The unity among all departmental batches was palpable, overcoming numerous challenges to deliver a memorable evening at Tower Hall Theater.The Executive Board of the AHEAD Student Association, alongside every undergraduate involved in dancing, singing, drama, backstage, organizing, and all other contributors, played integral roles in ensuring the event's grand success. Their collective dedication and creativity transformed challenges into triumphs, making C- මයිනස් an unforgettable showcase of talent and unity within the department.C- මයිනස් exemplified the spirit of the Department of Human Resources Management at the University of Kelaniya, celebrating not just achievements on stage but the resilience and creativity of its students in overcoming obstacles to create something truly remarkable.

ප්‍රඥාභිවන්දනා-2024

ප්‍රඥාභිවන්දනා- 2024 which is organized by the second year students for the first year students was successfully held on 25th April 2024 at Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara.The primary objective of this was to extend a warm welcome to the new batch of undergraduates into the Huma Resource Management department and to get the blessing of the triple gem for the new batch, leaving them with an unforgettable experience. The Dhamma sermon was preached by Venerable Gomaran kadawala hemarathana Thero.
Towards the end of the dhamma sermon, the vote of thanks was delivered by the undergraduate Tharusha Manod Jayarathna, and he conveyed the assertion of appreciation to Venerable Gomaran kadawala hemarathana Thero for fulfilling our minds with the illustrations of the Lord Buddha.
The event was concluded with a gracious vote of thanks from the Head of the Department Dr.M D P Pieris.He thanked the undergraduates and the lecturers for participating and making the dhamma program, “ප්‍රඥාභිවන්දනා-2024” successful.

Future Scape 2024

Workshop on harnessing the power of LinkedIn for undergraduates
Future Scape 2024 was an initiative taken by the AHEAD students’ Association of the Department of Human Resource Management to open the opportunity for undergraduates to grow their potential, network, and  develop their careers. This initiative emerged as a transformative platform, extending far beyond the confines of conventional academic pursuits, to nurture the latent talents and ambitions of undergraduates. Comprising two dynamic workshops, a pivotal career fair, and the unveiling of the AHEAD website, this initiative served as a catalyst for students to broaden their horizons and cultivate skills that transcend  disciplinary boundaries. Diesel and Motor Engineering PLC was named the Future Scape 2024 Bronze Partner. It provided a gateway to lifelong learning, empowering participants to realize their fullest capabilities and seize opportunities with newfound confidence.

Expert Mr. Amithe Gamage (CXO coach, personal branding strategist, LinkedIn marketing specialist, and sales performance evangelist) led the first workshop, which focused on harnessing the power of LinkedIn for undergraduates, providing invaluable insights into leveraging the platform for professional growth. Through interactive sessions, attendees gained practical strategies for optimizing their profiles, building meaningful connections, and showcasing their skills effectively. Mr. Gamage's expertise illuminated the nuances of networking, personal branding, and utilizing LinkedIn's features to unlock career opportunities. Armed with newfound knowledge and confidence, participants left the workshop equipped to navigate the competitive landscape of the professional world with their enhanced LinkedIn presence.
Elevate U
Elevate U is a pioneering initiative spearheaded by the AHEAD Students' Association of the Department of Human Resource Management. It is designed to empower schoolchildren with the knowledge and tools necessary for effective career planning. This program is aimed at nurturing the aspirations of the next generation. Elevate U provides insightful guidance to young minds. Central to this mission was a workshop session on career planning facilitated by Dr. Udaya Mohan, Senior Lecturer (Gr. 1), University of Kelaniya. Dr. Mohan's expertise and engaging delivery style made the session informative, inspirational, and educational, offering students a broad perspective on their future possibilities.One of the highlights of the program was an inter-school presentation competition, where students had the opportunity to showcase their skills and talents. Through this competition, students honed their public speaking abilities and gained valuable insights into teamwork, leadership, and creativity. The winning team in the competition was Thurstan College, Colombo. The first runners-up were St. Peter's College, Gampaha Branch, and the second runners-up were Nalanda College, Colombo. This achievement underscored the dedication and commitment of the students. In essence, Elevate U stands as a beacon of hope and guidance for schoolchildren, providing them with the necessary resources and support to plan for a successful future. Through its innovative approach and unwavering commitment to student development, Elevate U continues to make a positive impact on the lives of young learners, empowering them to reach new heights of achievement and success. An appreciation should be given to the lecture panel for the enthusiastic dedication in serving as the presentation competition judge board and to the Senior Treasurer of the Ahead Students Association, Ms. Madhavi Gunasekara, for their constant direction and support that made this event possible. Lastly, gratitude must also be given to the diligent members of the Executive Board and all AHEAD Association members, who were crucial in realizing this remarkable mission.In essence, Elevate U stands as a beacon of hope and guidance for schoolchildren, providing them with the necessary resources and support to plan for a successful future. Through its innovative approach andunwavering commitment to student development, Elevate U continues to make a positive impact on the lives of young learners, empowering them to reach new heights of achievement and success.

Sahurda -Phase 02

As part of the second phase of the project, the AHEAD team was planning to donate paint and painting items to the Sukitha Special School in Galpatha, as they had noticed that the school desk and chairs should be renovated to create a pleasant environment for the students to relax their minds and engage in educational activities. As a result of this idea, the Sahurda second phase was organized by the AHEAD team, and they found donations from Agio Tobacco Processing Company for this purpose. After that, the team went again to Sukitha Special School in Galpathatha on 20th March 2024 with sponsors, and they donated the paint and the painting items to the children. Donating paint and painting items to a disabled school is an act of generosity that can have a profound impact on both the students and the school community. Imagine the transformation that can occur when vibrant colors and artistic tools are introduced into an environment dedicated to nurturing the potential of students with disabilities. After all, the lecturers and sponsors also went on to see the classrooms and the activities that they engaged in at the school, and they had plenty of time filled with happiness with these children. The exceptional guidance provided by Ms. Madhavi Gunasekara, the Senior Treasurer of the AHEAD Student Association, was nothing short of an unwavering beacon. Moreover, the invaluable contributions of our esteemed panel of lecturers added layers of depth and insight to the project. Furthermore, the financial backing provided by our Gold Sponsor, Agio Tobacco Processing Company to organize the program, as well as other material contributions, were indispensable in bringing our vision to fruition.

The HRM Students Research Symposium and the Internship Certificate Awarding Ceremony 2023

The ceremony commenced with the welcome speech by the Symposium Chair Dr M D P Pieris – the Head of the Department. The first session was the Students’ Research Symposium which created an insightful platform for students to share their research findings. The Internship Certificate Awarding Ceremony was held thereafter as the second session. It included an internship experience-sharing session for the students. Prof. W. M. C. B. Wanninayake the Dean of the Faculty, graced the Students’ Research Symposium as the Guest of Honor, while Dr Chathuni Jayasinghe Senior Lecturer of the Department of HRM delivered the keynote speech. Ms Nisansala Perera - Human Resource Business Partner at Advania Pvt Ltd. delivered the keynote speech at the Internship Certificate Awarding Ceremony.
The ceremony was a true celebration of the commitment and hard work of the students. They were awarded certificates to appreciate their successful completion of research and Internships by the Symposium Chair, Guest of Honour, and all the senior lecturers who presented. Moreover, the industry partners were also admired for providing internship opportunities for the students by awarding tokens of appreciation.

SAHURDA' 23

On December 5, 2023, the event gracefully unfolded at  Sukitha   Special  School   in Galpatha, transforming a  mere  date  on  the calendar  into  a profound experience for all involved.  The primary objective  was not  just to host  an  organized  event but to orchestrate a symphony     of     care, understanding, and inclusivity for those little ones. 
On the  morning  of the  project  day,  our anticipation and  eagerness  led  us  to  the designated area, where we were met with an unexpected and heartwarming surprise. The differently   abled   children   had orchestrated a series of events, showcasing their talents  through dancing, and singing performances. Witnessing these    heartfelt    displays was an emotional journey, as their innate abilities, kindness, and affection  radiated  through each moment,  leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. The tears that welled up  in our  eyes were not  tears  of sorrow but  rather expressions  of overwhelming  joy and profound admiration  for  these  incredible children.
The exceptional guidance provided by Mr. M. D. P.  Peiris,  the  Head  of  the Department, and  Ms. Madhavi Gunasekara, the Senior Treasurer of the AHEAD Student Association,  was nothing  short of an unwavering beacon.  Their leadership illuminated  the path  for the  students,  infusing the  project  with  sincerity and purpose.Moreover,  the invaluable contributions of our  esteemed panel  of lecturers added  layers of depth  and  insight to the project. Furthermore, the  financial  backing  provided  by our sponsors  allowed us to organize  and execute the  event  seamlessly,  as  well as  other  material contributions, were indispensable in bringing our vision to fruition. After the soul-stirring  performances, we seized the opportunity to distribute  the stationery  and items we had carefully prepared  for the children. The palpable  excitement and gratitude  in their eyes were beyond words, serving as a powerful affirmation of the meaningful  impact our project had on their lives. Every smile and  expression of happiness  became a living testament  to the positive change we had  brought to these children, reinforcing the significance of our collective effort. 
To infuse an extra layer of delight into the occasion, one of our colleagues transformed into Santa Claus, becoming a source of boundless  joy as he distributed small gifts. The resulting  atmosphere of sheer joy and  laughter  proved contagious,   creating  a  festive  ambiance  that lingered  long  after  the  event  had concluded. In  that  transformative moment,  it became abundantly clear that  our  project  had  not only fulfilled material  needs but had also sown the seeds of lasting memories and genuine happiness  for these remarkable children.
In the tapestry of Sahurda '23, each thread  of effort, compassion,  and guidance wove together a narrative of unity and altruism.  This project not only touched  the lives of the differently abled children at Sukitha Special School  but also left an indelible mark  on the hearts  of everyone involved,  fostering  a sense of community,  empathy,  and shared humanity.

We had the privilege of hosting Mr.Viraj Henegedra, an esteemed guest and entrepreneur who shared invaluable insights on what it takes to thrive in the world of business.MR. Viraj Henegerara is a graduate of University of Kelaniya.

We can specially introduce him as a successful entrepreneur. He is currently working as a business advisor and he is the owner of the  Business Advisor YouTube channel. We invited him for a special workshop series on behalf of AHEAD student association, department of Human resource management, University of Kelaniya. This workshop series was successfully conducted and completed on the 26 th of October 2023.
Entrepreneurs are innovators who constantly challenge the status quo and seek new opportunities. Effective HR practices are crucial for managing employees and creating a thriving workplace culture. In the digital landscape, staying updated with the latest technologies is essential for business operations.

Personal branding, particularly on social media platforms like LinkedIn, is crucial for showcasing skills and staying updated with industry trends. Exposing new business ideas is essential in a world driven by innovation, encouraging participants to think outside the box and bring fresh perspectives to the market. Overall, entrepreneurs are all-rounders who must adapt to the ever-evolving digital landscape.

Inauguration ceremony for the Higher Diploma in Human Resource Management 2023

In a splendid gathering on the 29th of October 2023, the inauguration ceremony for the Higher Diploma in Human Resource Management took place at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. The occasion commenced with a warm welcome delivered by the Head of the Department of Human Resource Management, the erudite Senior Lecturer, Mr. M D P Pieris. The event's chief guest, Prof. Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, graced the event with his wisdom, emphasizing the profound responsibility of our learners in seizing this valuable opportunity to make intelligent choices that will shape their journey ahead. The day's Guest Speaker, Mr. Sudath Silva, General Manager - Human Resources, JAT Holdings PLC, shared invaluable insights on the significance of honing students’ skills to the highest caliber. The ceremony concluded with a gracious vote of thanks from the coordinator, Dr. Chathuni Jayasinghe, followed by an engaging initial workshop for the eager learners. The event was further enhanced by the presence of the faculty members from the Department of Human Resource Management.

The University of Kelaniya has recently renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Toc H Institute of Science and Technology (TIST). The MoU aims to enhance cooperation in the fields of academics, research, and cultural exchange programs. The original MoU was signed in 2014, and the renewed agreement reaffirms the commitment of both institutions to work together to achieve their shared goals.The renewed agreement will enable students and faculty members to travel to the partner institution for studies, training and research. This will facilitate the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and experiences between the two institutions, benefiting students and academics from both TIST and the University of Kelaniya.

In addition to promoting academic cooperation, the MoU also aims to strengthen cultural ties between the two institutions. The renewed agreement will enable both institutions to organize joint cultural programs, events, and activities, providing opportunities for students and academics to learn about each other's cultures and traditions. The signing ceremony was attended by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Senior Professor Nilaththi De Silva, and the President of the Toc H group of institutions, Allex Matthews. Overall, the renewed MoU between TIST and the University of Kelaniya represents a significant step towards promoting academic and cultural exchange between India and Sri Lanka, providing new opportunities for students and academics from both institutions to learn, grow, and collaborate.

Ms Erosha Fernando - Head of Talent and HR Services at INSEE Cement delivered the keynote speech at the Internship Certificate Awarding Ceremony.

The ceremony was a true celebration of the commitment and hard work of the students. They were awarded certificates to appreciate their successful completion of research and Internships by the Symposium Chair, Guest of Honour, and all the senior lecturers who presented. Moreover, the industry partners were also admired for providing internship opportunities for the students by awarding tokens of appreciation.

The Lord of the Debates - 2022” Concluded on the Final Day of Investment Week 2022

The thrilling grand finale of the debate competition featured two top-notch teams representing the Department of Human Resource Management and the Department of Commerce and Financial Management. The topic debated was the pressing issue of whether IMF bailout is a solution or not for the current economic crisis in Sri Lanka. After an intense and riveting debate, the team, which represented the Department of Human Resource Management emerged as the champion, showcasing their impressive skills and knowledge in the field. Herein, the immense support given by Mr. Tharindu Dhananjaya Weerasinghe - Senior Lecturer - Department of HRM in providing guidance and nurturing them with the knowledge is highly appreciated. 

Ms. Hashini Maheshi of the HRM department’s team secured the coveted title of "Best Debater," further cementing their victory.

Dharmadasa, a senior lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Kelaniya, Mr Shiran Fernando, the Chief Economist at The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, and Ms Buddhi Pathiraja, the Associate Director at BDO Consulting (Pvt.) Ltd.

Overall, the event was a true testament to the incredible talent and expertise of the participants, who passionately debated one of the most pressing economic issues of our time, leaving the audience captivated and inspired.

The 3Ds talent concert of the undergraduates of the Department of Human Resource Management was a tremendous event titled ‘මාංචු’ for the year 2023 and was held on the 22nd of July 2023 at the Tower Hall, Maradana. With a diverse range of talents, the event showcased the best of what these bright young minds have to offer. From musicians to dancers, organizers to creative designers, and everything in between, the stage was filled with an array of talents that left the audience gasping in amazement. With state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment, the HR undergraduates put on a show unlike any other. With the atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm, 3Ds became an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. And the overall management of this flamboyant event undoubtedly created skillful and daring future leaders, citizens and a person who values what they do. 

Community Projects by Second year undergraduates of the Department

This subject is offered in Level 02 Semester 01 of the Bachelor of Business Management (Honors) in Human Resource. Accordingly, students conducted these projects in line with the targets of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 04 – Quality Education. These projects largely contributed to developing the skills of the youth, which is a focus of SDG 04.
Through these projects, the students improved their communication skills, leadership, self-motivation, handling stress and pressure, decision making, planning, organizing, crisis management, altruism, public speaking, and most importantly, resilience. The students well embraced this opportunity to serve the community while developing themselves. At the same time, the undergraduates could contribute to  enabling the students at rural Sri Lankan schools to gain a quality education.
The whole batch participated in these projects by working in six groups of 24 members each and raised funds through different initiatives by themselves. A brief description of each project is as follows.  
 

 

Community projects by second year undergraduates of the department

Project ‘Paruwa’ – @ Galkanda Vidyalaya, Balangoda, Rathnapura

The project included the following activities.

Activity 01 - Renovation of the school and providing the facilities the school was in short of, such as a computer, a notice board, whiteboards, a cupboard, sports equipment, library books, and special edition books for the grade five students.

Activity 02 - All the students at the school were gifted with writing books, stationery items, water bottles, lunch boxes, and printed cloth bags. In addition, 10 under privileged students were gifted with special gift parcels.

Activity 03 – Above donations were made during an event that allowed primary school children to showcase their skills.
