The HR IMPELZ, organized by the Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with the AHEAD Students& Association, was successfully conducted on the 21st of November, 2024, at the Cyber Ground, University of Kelaniya. This sports day brought together students from all four years for a day filled with teamwork, creativity, and sportsmanship centred around the theme, "Cultures in
Combat." The event was graced by the presence of esteemed guests, including Professor Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies; Professor Kamal Thilakasiri, Senior Student Counsellor of the Faculty; Dr. Saroja Wanigasekara, Head of the Department; and the honoured panel of lecturers of the department. HR Impelz& was a special event, combining sports, creativity, leadership, and teamwork into one unforgettable experience. Students participated in team-building games, which encouraged collaboration. They were also able to showcase their creativity through activities such as designing houses, badges, and dance, all in line with the theme. HR Impelz’24 was a day to remember, filled with creativity, unity, and fun. It perfectly captured the theme “Cultures in Combat” and left everyone with lasting memories. The event highlighted the spirit of the Department of Human Resource Management, the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, and the generous support of People’s Bank and Ceylon Biscuit Limited (CBL), marking a wonderful moment for the HRM community at the University of Kelaniya.
The AHEAD Students Association of the Department of Human Resource Management at the University of Kelaniya recently hosted an impactful workshop series to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge to succeed in an ever-evolving world. This initiative brought together renowned experts to deliver transformative sessions focused on conquering challenges, Artificial Intelligence, mindfulness, and teamwork, setting the stage for a future of leadership and personal growth.
The event commenced with an inspiring session titled “Conquering Challenges and Building Discipline” conducted by Mr. Dilantha Malagamuwa, Sri Lanka's legendary racing driver on 14 th October 2024. Drawing from his own experiences on and off the track, Mr. Malagamuwa engaged the audience with insights into resilience, perseverance, and the discipline required to excel under pressure. His stories served as a testament to the importance of mental and emotional strength in facing life hurdles.
The second session, led by Dr. Chathura Rajapakse on 21 st October 2024, focused on the rising topic of " Artificial Intelligence ". Participants gained valuable insights into the transformative effects of AI, exploring its impact on industries, daily life, and the future of work. This impactful session highlighted the importance of staying informed and adaptable to thrive in a dynamic world.
Mindfulness and well-being took center stage in the third workshop led by Mr. Bhathiya
Arthanayake on 24 th October 2024. His session on “Mindfulness” provided participants with practical techniques to manage stress, improve focus, and foster emotional balance. In today’s fast-paced environment, Mr. Arthanayake's guidance on cultivating a mindful mindset resonated deeply, offering valuable lessons on enhancing personal and professional well-being. The series concluded with a high-energy session on “Teamwork” by Mr. Sumendra Jayaram, an acclaimed corporate trainer. The session was held on 29 th October 2024. With interactive activities and real-world scenarios, Mr. Jayaram demonstrated the significance of collaboration and effective communication in achieving shared goals. The workshop emphasized that teamwork is the backbone of any successful venture and highlighted strategies to foster unity and cohesion within diverse groups. The Horizon 360 workshop series concluded successfully with the aforementioned events. It was not just a series of workshops but a transformative experience designed to nurture the next generation of leaders. The AHEAD Students' Association continues to elevate student- led projects by fostering a culture of development, collaboration, and quality.

The AHEAD Students' Association of the Department of Human Resource Management at the University of Kelaniya held its Annual General Meeting on August 7, 2024, at the Faculty Auditorium. The event was attended by the Head of the Department, Senior Lecturer Dr. Saroja Wanigasekara, and other faculty members. The primary focus of the meeting was the appointment of the new executive board for the 2024/25 term. The ceremony began with traditional oil lamp lighting, followed by an inspiring speech from Dr. Wanigasekara, who praised the outgoing AHEAD team.
A highlight of the meeting was the launch of HR Odyssey 2.0, the association’s annual magazine, showcasing the achievements of the 2023/24 term. Reports from the outgoing Secretary and Treasurer provided a transparent overview of the association’s activities. Outgoing leaders, including Senior Treasurer Ms. Madhavee Gunesekara and President Mohomad Raqeeb, were honored for their contributions.
The meeting also featured a video presentation highlighting the association’s projects and recognized active members with appreciation certificates. The new Senior Treasurer, Ms. Vimansha Ranasinghe, and President, Tharusha Jayarathne, were appointed, with both expressing their commitment to continuing AHEAD's legacy of excellence.
The HR 3Ds Extravaganza titled this year as C- මයිනස්, unfolded magnificently at the Tower Hall Theater, organized by the AHEAD Student’s Association of the Department of Human Resources Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya. Renowned musician and composer Dr. Rohana Weerasinghe, actresses Ms. Senali Fonseka and Ms. Tharindi Fernando, and actor, former HRM department alumnus Mr. Hashan Rathnayake graced the event as chief guests. Adding to the prestige, Professor Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Senior Lecturer Dr. Saroja Wanigasekara, Head of the Department, and singer Indika Ruwan (Roony) joined as special invitees. The Senior Treasurer of the AHEAD Students’ Association, Senior Lecturer Ms. Madhavi Gunasekara, and the esteemed lecture panel were also in attendance, contributing to the success of the occasion.The essence of C- මයිනස් was to showcase campus life in an exemplary manner, reflecting an A+ standard. Months of meticulous planning and tireless efforts from undergraduates culminated in a theatrical experience that moved audiences to both laughter and tears. More than just an event, C- මයිනස් encapsulated the emotions and aspirations of all undergraduates, providing them a platform to express their talents beyond academic pursuits and nurturing their emotional intelligence. The unity among all departmental batches was palpable, overcoming numerous challenges to deliver a memorable evening at Tower Hall Theater.The Executive Board of the AHEAD Student Association, alongside every undergraduate involved in dancing, singing, drama, backstage, organizing, and all other contributors, played integral roles in ensuring the event's grand success. Their collective dedication and creativity transformed challenges into triumphs, making C- මයිනස් an unforgettable showcase of talent and unity within the department.C- මයිනස් exemplified the spirit of the Department of Human Resources Management at the University of Kelaniya, celebrating not just achievements on stage but the resilience and creativity of its students in overcoming obstacles to create something truly remarkable.
We had the privilege of hosting Mr.Viraj Henegedra, an esteemed guest and entrepreneur who shared invaluable insights on what it takes to thrive in the world of business.MR. Viraj Henegerara is a graduate of University of Kelaniya.
We can specially introduce him as a successful entrepreneur. He is currently working as a business advisor and he is the owner of the Business Advisor YouTube channel. We invited him for a special workshop series on behalf of AHEAD student association, department of Human resource management, University of Kelaniya. This workshop series was successfully conducted and completed on the 26 th of October 2023.

Overall, entrepreneurs are all-rounders who must adapt to the ever-evolving digital landscape.
In a splendid gathering on the 29th of October 2023, the inauguration ceremony for the Higher Diploma in Human Resource Management took place at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. The occasion commenced with a warm welcome delivered by the Head of the Department of Human Resource Management, the erudite Senior Lecturer, Mr. M D P Pieris. The event's chief guest, Prof. Bandara Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, graced the event with his wisdom, emphasizing the profound responsibility of our learners in seizing this valuable opportunity to make intelligent choices that will shape their journey ahead. The day's Guest Speaker, Mr. Sudath Silva, General Manager - Human Resources, JAT Holdings PLC, shared invaluable insights on the significance of honing students’ skills to the highest caliber. The ceremony concluded with a gracious vote of thanks from the coordinator, Dr. Chathuni Jayasinghe, followed by an engaging initial workshop for the eager learners. The event was further enhanced by the presence of the faculty members from the Department of Human Resource Management.
The University of Kelaniya has recently renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Toc H Institute of Science and Technology (TIST). The MoU aims to enhance cooperation in the fields of academics, research, and cultural exchange programs. The original MoU was signed in 2014, and the renewed agreement reaffirms the commitment of both institutions to work together to achieve their shared goals.The renewed agreement will enable students and faculty members to travel to the partner institution for studies, training and research. This will facilitate the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and experiences between the two institutions, benefiting students and academics from both TIST and the University of Kelaniya.
In addition to promoting academic cooperation, the MoU also aims to strengthen cultural ties between the two institutions. The renewed agreement will enable both institutions to organize joint cultural programs, events, and activities, providing opportunities for students and academics to learn about each other's cultures and traditions. The signing ceremony was attended by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Senior Professor Nilaththi De Silva, and the President of the Toc H group of institutions, Allex Matthews. Overall, the renewed MoU between TIST and the University of Kelaniya represents a significant step towards promoting academic and cultural exchange between India and Sri Lanka, providing new opportunities for students and academics from both institutions to learn, grow, and collaborate.
The ceremony commenced with the welcome speech by the Symposium Chair Mr M D P Pieris – the Head of the Department. The first session was the Students’ Research Symposium which created an insightful platform for students to share their research findings. The Internship Certificate Awarding Ceremony was held thereafter as the second session. It included an internship experience-sharing session for the students. Dr P. N. D. Fernando, the Dean of the Faculty, graced the Students’ Research Symposium as the Guest of Honor, while Dr Prabashini Wijewantha of the Department of HRM delivered the keynote speech. Ms Erosha Fernando - Head of Talent and HR Services at INSEE Cement delivered the keynote speech at the Internship Certificate Awarding Ceremony.
The ceremony was a true celebration of the commitment and hard work of the students. They were awarded certificates to appreciate their successful completion of research and Internships by the Symposium Chair, Guest of Honour, and all the senior lecturers who presented. Moreover, the industry partners were also admired for providing internship opportunities for the students by awarding tokens of appreciation.
The thrilling grand finale of the debate competition featured two
top-notch teams representing the Department of Human Resource Management and
the Department of Commerce and Financial Management. The topic debated was the
pressing issue of whether IMF bailout is a solution or not for the current
economic crisis in Sri Lanka. After an intense and riveting debate, the team,
which represented the Department of Human Resource Management emerged as the
champion, showcasing their impressive skills and knowledge in the field.
Herein, the immense support given by Mr. Tharindu Dhananjaya Weerasinghe -
Senior Lecturer - Department of HRM in providing guidance and nurturing them
with the knowledge is highly appreciated.
Ms. Hashini Maheshi of the HRM department’s team secured the coveted
title of "Best Debater," further cementing their victory.

All are HRM second-year students of 2020/2021 Academic year.
The panel of judges for this impressive event included distinguished
experts in the field, such as Dr P.D.C.S. Dharmadasa, a senior lecturer in the
Department of Economics at the University of Kelaniya, Mr Shiran Fernando, the
Chief Economist at The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, and Ms Buddhi Pathiraja, the
Associate Director at BDO Consulting (Pvt.) Ltd.
Overall, the event was a true testament to the incredible talent and
expertise of the participants, who passionately debated one of the most
pressing economic issues of our time, leaving the audience captivated and
inspired.

The 3Ds talent concert of the undergraduates of the Department of Human Resource Management was a tremendous event titled ‘මාංචු’ for the year 2023 and was held on the 22nd of July 2023 at the Tower Hall, Maradana. With a diverse range of talents, the event showcased the best of what these bright young minds have to offer. From musicians to dancers, organizers to creative designers, and everything in between, the stage was filled with an array of talents that left the audience gasping in amazement. With state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment, the HR undergraduates put on a show unlike any other. With the atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm, 3Ds became an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. And the overall management of this flamboyant event undoubtedly created skillful and daring future leaders, citizens and a person who values what they do.
The project included the following activities.
Activity 01 - Renovation of the school and providing the facilities the school was in short of, such as a computer, a notice board, whiteboards, a cupboard, sports equipment, library books, and special edition books for the grade five students.
Activity 02 - All the students at the school were gifted with writing books, stationery items, water bottles, lunch boxes, and printed cloth bags. In addition, 10 under privileged students were gifted with special gift parcels.
Activity 03 – Above donations were made during an event that allowed primary school children to showcase their skills.
