Agora’24: A Celebration of Talent and Culture

Agora’24, the annual talent shows organized by the first-year undergraduates of the Department of Finance, University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on November 9, 2024, at Dharmaloka Hall, University of Kelaniya.

 

This year’s event, themed “Experience the Odyssey of Flavour,” offered a mesmerizing fusion of Greek mythology and traditional Sri Lankan culture. The evening was brought to life through captivating music, dance, and drama performances, showcasing the first-year students' diverse talents.

 

Renowned Sri Lankan actress, author, and activist Michelle Dilhara graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, adding star quality to the vibrant celebration. The event was attended by over 800 guests, including faculty members such as Prof. Ruwani Fernando, Head of the Department of Finance; Prof. Susima Weligamage; and Prof. Narada Fernando, along with the academic staff and students from all four years.

 

Agora’24 was a platform for students to express their creativity and a celebration of cultural diversity and collaboration. Its success is a testament to the enthusiasm and dedication of the Department of Finance’s first-year students.

DFIN Field Visit 2024

First-year undergraduates of the Department of Finance, University of Kelaniya, took part in a field visit to the KDU Southern Campus in Sooriyawewa on the 21st and 22nd of November 2024.
 
This field visit focused on leadership, teamwork, and personal development as students engaged in leadership games to enhance collaboration and problem-solving skills. Students also attended sessions on professional etiquette and grooming and participated in survival exercises and physical activities to strengthen teamwork in challenging environments.

Additionally, students actively participated in a variety show, further showcasing their creativity and team spirit. It was a truly enriching experience that combined learning, growth, and leadership development.

Investment Week 2024: A Grand Success!

Investment Week 2024 organized by the Finance Students’ Association, Department of Finance, University of Kelaniya, was held on the 3rd of September at the BMICH, featuring the country’s largest investment exhibition, the Investment Trade Show. The event showcased a diverse array of investment products from banks, insurance companies, fund management firms, stockbroking companies, and the government institutions. It also offered a range of financial literacy workshops, interactive sessions, and seminars to deepen public knowledge and engagement with the world of finance.

In addition to the Investment Trade Show, the event featured the SHILPA Seminar Series, aimed at supporting school students preparing for their Advanced Level examinations in Business Studies, and Accounting, and equipping them with essential tools and insights for success.

The event was graced by the esteemed Chief Guest, Dr. P. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, along with Guest of Honour, Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Mr. J. P. R. Karunaratne, Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Sri Lanka and Prof. W. M. C. B. Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies.

Banking and Insurance Summit 2024

Finance Students Association, Department of Finance, University of Kelaniya organized “Banking and Insurance Summit,” which was part of Investment Week 2024 and was held on the 4th of September at the Duncan White Auditorium, Ministry of Sports. The summit, themed "Bridging Knowledge and Innovation: The Future of Banking and Insurance," successfully expanded upon last year's Banking Summit by incorporating the insurance sector, emphasizing the interconnectedness of these vital industries.

Distinguished panelists from both the banking and insurance sectors shared valuable insights and experiences on topics such as digital transformation, risk management, regulatory changes, and customer-centric strategies. The event provided a wealth of knowledge for students and professionals interested in these fields.

Dr. P. A. Kiriwandeniya, the founder of the SANASA Movement in Sri Lanka, was the Chief Guest of the event and summit also featured esteemed guests including Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya; Mr. Halin Hettigoda, President of the Association of Professional Bankers of Sri Lanka; Mr Chandana Aluthgama, President of Insurance Association of Sri Lanka; Prof. W. M. C. B. Wanninayake, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies; Dr. Ruwani Fernando, Head of the Department of Finance; and Senior Prof. R. P. C. Ranjani, Cadre Chair and Senior Professor of Finance.

The discussion forum included panelists: Mr. Sumudu Gunawardhana, Chief Information Officer at Commercial Bank of Ceylon; Mr. Harsha Wanigatunga, Chief Information Officer at Seylan Bank; Mr. Nuwan Hettiarachchi, Director and Chief Information Officer at Continental Insurance Lanka; and Mr. Clement Jayaraj, Chief Technology Officer at Fairfirst Insurance. The session was expertly moderated by Prof. Narada Fernando, Professor, Department of Finance at the University of Kelaniya.

A significant moment during the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Association of Professional Bankers of Sri Lanka and the University of Kelaniya, reinforcing the collaboration between academia and the banking industry.  The objectives of the MOU are to award the most outstanding graduate in the Bachelor of Business Management Honors in Banking with a gold medal and a cash prize. Additionally, the Association of Professional Bankers of Sri Lanka will offer opportunities for selected top-performing third-year undergraduates in the banking degree to enroll in their Junior Bankers Programme.

Donating a fully facilitated IT unit to Meegahagoda Kanishta Vidyalaya, Ahangama

With an understanding of the importance of technology in education during Covid19 pandemic situation the first year students of the Department of Finance, University of Kelaniya planned to donate a fully facilitated IT unit to Meegahagoda Kanishta Vidyalaya, Ahangama. The proposed IT unit has been completed with the. equal contribution of all the DFIN first year students. The opening ceremony of the IT unit will be held on 10th April 2021 from 10.00 am onwards. First year students of the Department of Finance cordially invite you to take part in this precious event via Zoom / Facebook platforms.

The Department of Finance offers four degree programmes in the fields of finance, banking, insurance and financial engineering to cope up with the current developments in the financial service sector and the business management field. These degree programmes are introduced with the view of producing graduates to cater to the requirements of the rapidly changing business world.  Thus, curriculums are designed to provide future leaders with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, practice and insights needed to create value for organizations and for the society and it will enhance students' potential to lead organizations in a diverse, global context.
