We are the Department of Finance, we have proven our "A-grade quality" throughout the past decade by being at the forefront of knowledge in finance through teaching, research, service, and outreach. With materializing the mission of delivering first-rate finance education and contributing to the financial and economic development of Sri Lanka and other regions, we have recently established another new initiative; the Center for Financial Literacy (CFL).The main objective of CFL is to serve national and international needs for education and research consulting services in financial literacy.
In its simplest form, we offer practical and applicable finance knowledge. Financial literacy is essential for inclusive growth and collaborative economic development, which are now central to the research agenda and national policy frameworks in countries all around the world.Numerous researchers demonstrate that people with high financial literacy tend to be more logical when making financial decisions; they save more money, obtain funds via the official financial system at reasonable rates, and promptly decide on suitable investments and retirement plans. Through this, they will be able to accumulate assets and guarantee their "financial well-being" throughout their lives.
Sri Lanka is a country with a high print literacy rate of 92.64%, however, according to a survey led by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) with the technical and financial assistance of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the "financial literacy" rate of the country is 57.9%, which is considerably low.
As we have recognized the significance in advance, we strive to enhance financial literacy through our Center for Financial Literacy. We carry out exceptional programs, including workshops to heighten financial literacy among graduates and undergraduates, employees in the public and private sectors, and people in the general public. We provide training of trainers (TOT) programs to create a pool of qualified instructors who can later instruct others on the subject matter.
Further center for Financial Literacy provides personal finance and money management education to the school students community. These free financial coaching sessions has really helped the students to understand their finances.
Ultimately, in line with the university's vision, we seek to "Become a Centre of excellence in the creation and dissemination of knowledge for sustainable development".
