In collaboration with the Chinabay Air Force Academy, the Commerce Club of the University of Kelaniya organised an Outbound Training programme for the second and third year students of the Bachelor of Commerce degree programme. The event took place on the 19th and 20th of March 2025 at the Chinabay Air Force Academy, Trincomalee.
The aim of building the skills and confidence, and developing the personal growth of these young individuals was undoubtedly fulfilled, thanks to the tireless effort of the Sri Lanka Air Force personnel.
Having started off with an educational session, our students were made aware of the importance and practice of leadership in a fresh perspective. Following this insightful session was a jungle hike, which played an important role in skill acquisition and leadership building. The students, through this, were able to step out of their comfort zones, challenge themselves, and develop teamwork, collaborative skills, adaptability and resilience, enjoying the greenery and stunning views all the while. This was evident as they helped each other navigate through the jungle, motivating each other, and uniting as one. This was followed by a bonfire at Marble Beach, where students stepped forward to showcase their talents in singing and dancing.
The highlight of the second day was the Outbound Training. Organized by the Air Force were several games, in which students participated in groups. Each game was a challenge of its own, stimulating skill growth of different sorts. Here, students were opportune to develop communication, leadership, adaptability and interactive skills, to name a few. These games not only challenged students physically but also tested their patience and intelligence. At the end of the Outbound Training, a session was held to appreciate those who put in great effort to ensure this event was a success. This included the Air Force Personnel of the Chinabay Air Force Academy, the lecturers of the Department of Commerce and Financial Management and the office bearers of the Commerce Club of the University of Kelaniya.
Upon conclusion of the Outbound Training Programmes, it was safe to say that the objective of developing a number of soft skills in the second and third year undergraduates of the Bachelor of Commerce degree programme was successfully fulfilled. Held over two days, students were able to bring out their skills, and make lasting connections. Through this event, students received a transformative experience, equipping them with invaluable skills that will be vital beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact.
