WHO WE ARE
The Department of Commerce and Financial Management (DCFM) as the oldest department in the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies (FCMS) of University of Kelaniya has consistently been contributing to achieve the vision and mission of the university and the faculty.
The Department of Commerce & Financial Management (DCFM), formerly known as the Department of Commerce was initially set up as a sub-section under the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts in 1976. It is the founder of Commerce and Management education at the University of Kelaniya and pioneered to form the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies in 1995.
The Department of Commerce & Financial Management (DCFM), formerly known as the Department of Commerce was initially set up as a sub-section under the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts in 1976. It is the founder of Commerce and Management education at the University of Kelaniya and pioneered to form the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies in 1995.
Its current portfolio of degree programs includes the Bachelor of Commerce (Special) degree and the Bachelor of Commerce (Special) degree with specializations on Business Technology, Financial Management, and Entrepreneurship, the Master of Commerce (M.Com) degree program and the Diploma’ Higher Diploma in Business programs. The Master of Commerce degree program offered by the DCFM is one of the earliest postgraduate degree programs in Sri Lanka to emphasize the importance of research degrees. In recent times, the department has also introduced a Diploma in Business program to cater to students who are unable to enter universities. In addition to this, the increasing number of staff with international PhD qualifications in the department also strengthens the capacity of the department to deliver a quality postgraduate degree program.
As a responsible department of the faculty, the prime objective of the DCFM is to provide both undergraduate and postgraduate students with all the necessary knowledge, skills and training in order to create proud and quality graduates. The DCFM does continuously improve and revise its curricular to prepare its graduates to meet ever-changing environmental conditions. Thus, the domain of the DCFM is unique and independent in every aspect from the other degree programs offered by the parent faculty and elsewhere in Sri Lanka.

DEPARTMENT HISTORY
1976
Department of Commerce established as a sub department attached to the Department of Economics under the Faculty of Arts.
1976
1980
It was given full department status and shifted to the Faculty of Social Sciences from Faculty of Arts.
1986
The first Postgraduate programme of the Faculty (Master of Commerce) was started
1986
1993
Started the Bachelor of Commerce (External) Degree Programme which is now running with the collaboration of Centre for Open and Distance Learning.
1994
Started two degree programs named as Human Resource Management and Accountancy.
1994
1995
Established a new department as Department of Human Resource Management and Accountancy.
1998
Formed the Marketing Management unit under the Department of Commerce
1998
2003
Formed the Association of Commerce and Management Education (ACME)
2005
Achieved a competitive grant from the World Bank funded project named IRQUE (Improving Relevance and Quality of Undergraduate Education) with Rs. 65 million.
2005

Knowledge Centre was opened under the department
2008
Renamed the Department of Commerce as the Department of Commerce and Financial Management.

Two new degree programs were introduced as Bachelor of Commerce (Special) Degree in Entrepreneurship Program and Bachelor of Commerce (Special) Degree in Business Technology Program.

Introduced an extension program named Diploma in Business

New degree program was introduced as Bachelor of Commerce (Special) Degree in Financial Management.
