University of Kelaniya, Department of Finance Shines as Runners-up at CFA Research Challenge 2023/24

In a remarkable showcase of talent and dedication, the Department of Finance at the University of Kelaniya has secured the prestigious position of runners-up at the CFA Research Challenge 2023/24. The competition, organized by the CFA Society Sri Lanka, saw participation from twelve esteemed university teams, each vying for the top honors.

Representing the University of Kelaniya were two exceptional teams, Team B and Team C, who showcased exemplary skills and knowledge in finance and investment analysis. It was Team B that emerged triumphant as the runners-up at the grand finale of the challenge.

Comprised of five talented individuals, Team B exhibited outstanding teamwork and expertise throughout the competition. The team members include Mechale Martis (Leader), Pasindu Samadhith, Vinodya Sithumini, Thisaru Amath, and Darshana Yapa. Their strategic insights and analytical prowess undoubtedly contributed to their remarkable success in the challenge.

Meanwhile, Team C, led by Tharushi Sewmini, demonstrated commendable performance and dedication. Alongside Tharushi were her team members Samadhi Weerasinghe, Chamika Nanayakkara, Chanuka Dilshan, and Aathif Mohamed. Together, they exemplified the spirit of excellence and determination that the University of Kelaniya stands for.

Behind the scenes, these teams received invaluable guidance and mentorship from both academic and industry experts. Mrs. Nethmi Herath, CFA, and Ms. Sandali Sudasinghe served as their academic mentors, providing them with the necessary knowledge and support. Additionally, industry mentors Mr. Dilum Fernando, CFA, Associate Vice President at NDB Investment Bank, and Mr. Kushan Senanayake, CFA, Consultant at Oceans Ltd., played a pivotal role in shaping the teams' strategies and refining their presentations.

The achievement of the Department of Finance, University of Kelaniya, in the CFA Research Challenge 2023/24 is a testament to the institution's commitment to fostering excellence in finance education. It not only highlights the exceptional talent nurtured within the university but also underscores the importance of practical learning experiences such as these competitions in preparing students for real-world challenges in the finance industry.

As the runners-up, Team B has brought immense pride and honor to their alma mater, showcasing the University of Kelaniya's standing as a hub of excellence in finance education. Their success serves as an inspiration to future generations of finance professionals and reaffirms the university's position as a leading institution in Sri Lanka's academic landscape.
