A nation’s overall capacity depends considerably on its research. The generation and dissemination of knowledge through research has long been recognized as an essential requirement for a country’s economic health and living standard. Research not only helps solve practical problems and brings about material improvements via novel and improved products and services, it also provides insights and new ideas that enrich human understanding of various social, economic and cultural phenomena.  Universities, as centers of knowledge production and transmission, play a critical role in the national research and human capital generating process.  Further, such research helps to flourish teaching and raise the profile and reputation of universities and their faculty members nationally and internationally. Although conducting of research is a part and parcel of the role of universities and a key indicator of their performance, Sri Lankan universities are yet somewhat lagging behind on this aspect compared to most of universities in the region and other international universities. This is most visible in such faculties as social sciences, humanities and businesses. Several factors have lead for this less attention on conducting research. Among others, the lack of research culture in universities, funding problems, dearth of expertise in respective fields, heavy teaching work load, the absence of proper institutional settings etc. are to the fore.

Setting up of distinctive research centers has been identified as one of the important initiatives in order to foster research culture among academia and to provide a platform for academics to create, enhance and demonstrate their research skills within a well defined framework. Further, such centers can act as knowledge transfer entities aiming to improve collaboration and exploitation of research results and their uptake by business.

Accordingly, the Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies established the Centre for Management research in 2012 in order to achieve the following main objectives.

Objectives of the centre

The over-riding objective of the Centre for Management Research is to educate, conduct, support and disseminate research that contributes to advancing business economy in Sri Lanka. In doing so, the Centre will position itself at the forefront of management research in the country. The sub objectives of the Centre are:

  • To conduct rigorous research and produce quality research outputs in management and associated subject areas.
  • To assist undergraduate and postgraduate students to develop research capability.
  • To enhance research skills of members of the Faculty.
  • To conduct conferences, seminars, workshops to proliferate management education and research.
  • To undertake collaborative research with other national and international research groupings.
  • To develop research partnerships with industry and trade associations of the country.
  • To obtain internal and external funding to undertake the work of the Centre.
