An internship is a pre-professional applied experience that offers practical work exposure in the world of work, which allows students to apply the theory they learnt in the classroom back in a professional work environment.

The Department of Accountancy (DoA) is the pioneer of introducing internship programme in to the undergraduate curriculum of the University of Kelaniya in 1999, under the leadership of Professor. J.M.D. Ariyarathna of the Department of Accountancy. The Internship in Accounting became a compulsory course unit with an allocated credit weight of 8 credits.

A remarkable landmark of the accountancy internship program was noted in the year 2005, with the financial benefits received from the World Bank project on Improving Relevance and Quality of Undergraduate Education (IRQUE) coordinated under the leadership of Professor P.M.C. Thilakarathne. This project was immensely benefited in enhancing the quality of the internship program.

An independent centre for internship programme called the “IAF Centre” was established to formalize the coordination of interns with academic atmosphere. The DoA acquired a motor coach from funds received by the IRQUE project to provide transport facilities for students to reach their training destinations on time.

Currently, the Internship programme of the DoA is one of the best internship programs offered by the university system with over 15 years of experience. A comprehensive internship guide has been prepared by the DoA to facilitate the internship programme in both Audit and Non- Audit sector.

There is a tendency among students at the DoA in securing internship training placements at Big Five audit firms. The Internship Programme encompasses important training categories such as Financial Accounting, Auditing, Management Accounting, Taxation, Financial Management, Information & Communication Technology and Company Secretarial Practices under Audit sector or Non Audit sector. Apart from the subject matters, this internship programme works as a monitoring tool for enhancing the soft skills and behavioural aspects of students.  For these reasons, the graduate output is fit into the world of work.

The Department of Accountancy is one of the leading departments in the university system adopting the technology in higher education for teaching, learning and assessments. The DoA has implemented a systematic monitoring and evaluation mechanism to enrich the existing internship programme up to the International Education Standards. This monitoring mechanism is more focused on a Quad relationship including the intern, academic supervisor, intern’s external supervisor and the internship committee.

Further, the online Learning Management System (LMS) facilitates to maintain a continuous rapport with the interns. Students have 24X7 access real time and offline at any login location to the system. The DoA also works with Microsoft Sri Lanka to disseminate subject delivery in digital form.

Characteristics of an Internship include:

  • Time period: one year to one an half year
  • Generally at one employer site at a time
  • Usually part-time; may be paid or unpaid
  • Learning activities common to most internships include learning objectives, observation, reflection, evaluation and assessment

Digital Recording & Evaluation System (DRES)

DoA produces technology savvy accounting graduates to match with the 21st century graduate profile. With that inception, the Department of Accountancy has introduced Digital Recording and Evaluation System (DRES), the digital version of the internship record book in parallel to the Manual Student Record Book in 2017. This system facilitates to uphold and maintain a continuous rapport with the interns. Students have 24X7 access in real time at any login location to the system to further streamline the internship programme.

The DRES is a user-friendly system and it is expected that this will enhance the quality of the Internship Programme while maintaining the continuous rapport with students, training supervisors and academic supervisors. The URL of the DRES: http://dres.doa.lk/
