Striding to the Next Level: Digitalization of the Accountancy Internship Programme

An internship is a pre-professional learning experience that offers practical work exposure in the world of work, which allows students to apply theory learn in the classroom in a professional environment.

Department of Accountancy is the pioneer of introducing internship program in to the undergraduate curriculum of the University of Kelaniya in the year 1999 under the leadership of professor. J.M.D. Ariyarathna of Department of Accountancy. Internship in Accounting became a compulsory course unit with a weightage of 8 credits for the undergraduates.

A remarkable landmark of the accountancy internship program was noted in the year 2005 with the benefits received from the IRQUE project under the leadership of Professor P.M.C. Thilakarathne which was helpful in enhancing the quality of the internship program.

A separate centre for internship called “IAF Centre” was established to formalize the coordination of interns with academic atmosphere. Department acquired a motor coach also under the IRQUE project which facilitates students to reach training destinations on time.

Currently the Internship programme of the department of accountancy is one of the best internship programs in the university system having the 15 years of experience. A comprehensive internship guide has been prepared by the DoA to facilitate internship programme in Audit and Non Audit sector.

There is a tendency of securing training opportunities in big five audit firms by the DoA. Internship encompasses important training categories such as Financial Accounting, Auditing, Management Accounting, Taxation, Financial Management, Information & Communication Technology and Company Secretarial Practices under Audit sector or Non Audit sector. As a result of that, graduate output is fit into the world of work. Apart from the subject matters, this particular internship programme work as a monitoring tool for enhancing students’ soft skills and behavioural aspects.

Department of Accountancy implements a systematic monitoring and evaluation mechanism to enrich the existing program up to the International Education Standards. Monitoring mechanism is more focused on a Quad relationship including intern, academic supervisor, intern’s external supervisor and internship committee.

Learning Management System facilitate in order to maintain the continuous rapport with the interns. Students have 24X7 access real time and offline at any login location to the system.

Further DoA is one of the leading departments in the university system adopting the technology in higher education for teaching, learning and assessment. DoA works with Microsoft Sri Lanka to disseminate subject delivery in digital form.

Therefore DoA provide technology savvy accounting graduate to match with 21st century graduate profile. With that inception, Department of Accountancy has introduced Digital Recording and Evaluation System (DRES), the digital version of the internship record book in parallel to the Manual Student Record Book in year 2017, which facilitates to maintain a continuous rapport with interns. Students have 24X7 access in real time at any login location to the system.to further streamline the internship programme.

Process of the Digital Recording and Evaluation System (DRES)

A specific manual of the DRES has been prepared by the DoA and are separately issued to Students, Training supervisors and Academic supervisors. Once the training supervisor signs the training agreement with the student, they will receive user credentials to log in to the system. A Delegated User for the system can be assigned if the training supervisor needs and the minimum qualification of the delegated user is a degree from a recognized university or be a member of a professional body.

Students are required to submit their training progress weekly, for the training supervisor approval; but the training supervisor can give their approval monthly. Once the training supervisor approves, student cannot do further amendments and approved records then send to  the academic supervisor for final comments on students work.

DRES is a user friendly system and expect it will enhance the quality of the Internship Programme while maintaining the continuous rapport with students, training supervisors and academic supervisors.
