2nd International Conference for Accounting Researchers and Educators (ICARE)

“Accounting, Governance & Corporate Sustainability”

The 2nd International Conference for Accounting Researchers and Educators (ICARE) organized by the Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies, University of Kelaniya was held on 11th January 2017 at the Auditorium of Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. The theme of the conference is “Accounting, Governance and Corporate Sustainability”.

The ICARE aims to bring together academics and practitioners of accounting profession which provides an unparalleled opportunity for meaningful interaction among academia, students and accounting professionals while exchanging knowledge on contemporary accounting developments and theoretical progressions. The Chief Guest Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, Dean, Faculty of Commerce &Management Studies, Senior Professor M.J.S. Wijerathne, Chairman of the research council, Keynote speaker Mr. JagathPerera, Partner – KPMG in Sri Lanka and Maldives, Head of Risk Consulting Services – KPMG Sri Lanka, Vice President – Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, Guest of Honour Ms. Sri Widowathi, Country Director for Sri Lanka Resident Mission, Asian Development Bank, Dr. W.V.A.D. Karunarathne, Chair of the conference and Head, Department of Accountancy and Mr. LasanthaWickramasinghe, President, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, Heads of departments, academic staff, third year and final year undergraduates and representatives from professional institutes and global audit firms are attendees to the event.

ICARE achieved its purpose arranging the conference mainly into two phases. First academic professional collaboration with technical paper discussion forum. It will allow professional organizations to share their experience with academics and Students. Mr. SujeewaRjapakse, Managing Partner - BDO Partners, Mr. T. Dharmarajah, Partner – Amarasekera & Company, Mr. JagathPerera, Vice President – The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, Prof. P.M.C. Thilakarathne, Director – Centre for Distance and Continuing Education, Prof. AriyarathneJayamaha, Dean – Faculty of Graduate Studies were the panelists of the discussion forum. Three professional Institutes and four global audit firms in a one forum together with academics and students will be a revolutionary change for the future of accounting education in Sri Lanka. Technical papers outputs were published as the “ICARE Magazine”.

Second Focus is Accounting Researches. There were 35 local and foreign research papers were presented at the conference and selected full papers will be published in the online Journal of Accounting Researchers and Educators and E- Repository system of University of Kelaniya.

Third focus towards the accountancy undergraduates. There are 95 successfully completed research proposals were presented through posters at the conference premises and 87 abstracts were published as conference proceedings. Altogether 225 research outputs were published which is a remarkable achievement in ICARE for a sustainable accounting future.

The ICARE assisted to the mission of becoming leading green university in Asia and also to provide a true sense to the conference theme of “sustainability”, the conference aligned all its activities to environmental friendly fashion which is a part of triple bottom line for corporate sustainable development.

ICARE will be a new beginning of academic professional collaboration for the betterment of the future of accounting profession.
