1. Introduction
The Department of Finance (DFin) established in June 2011 with a view to improve the quality of the finance education in Sri Lanka. It offers the Bachelor of Business Management (Special) Degree in Finance. The department has so far produced 340 graduates and most of them are holding the highest positions in the managerial ranks particularly in the field of finance and business management. The department is equipped with both academically and professionally sound academic staff. With the recognition of the growing demand for the leaders in finance the department wishes to propose the “Higher Diploma in Business Finance”. This will be an opportunity to cater the knowledge seekers those who have not been qualified for university entrance.
2. Rationale
Uniqueness, importance of the finance discipline, and growing demand for finance professionals in the job market, revealed that finance professionals can play a major role in both public and private sectors.
Personals specialized in finance are very important today in the context of financial crisis which happened due to improper finance related decisions. Such professionals could prevent such crises by applying their sound theoretical and practical knowledge and helping the country to prosper.
Moreover, the field of finance is broader and it caters to the different parts of the economy such as banking, finance, insurance, research analysis and general organizations. Therefore, there are more opportunities available for the people who are specialized in finance with specific finance qualifications. Apart from the university finance graduates the department and caters to the people who are deprived from the university and the people who already engage with the finance field. This will become one of a valuable qualification to the people who are interested to work in finance sector. The main purpose of the programme is to foster sound knowledge among its learners and to help to the development of the finance sector and to the national economy.
This programme is designed in accordance with the requirements under the Sri Lanka qualification framework Level (SLQL) 3 and 4 in the Sri Lanka qualification framework introduced by the Ministry of Higher education.
3. Objectives
The objectives of the Diploma programme are;
- To provide knowledge and a recognized qualification in the field of business finance.
- To produce competent personnel in business finance to the job market who will contribute to the development of the economy.
- To provide the opportunity to advanced level school leavers to get a qualification in the field of finance from a recognized university leading to higher educational qualifications.
4. Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the higher diploma in business finance programme, the students will be able to;
- Demonstrate a broad range of theoretical knowledge in finance
- Apply the theoretical knowledge to the practical decision making in finance areas
- Develop their decision making and analytical skills to be effective contributors as practitioners in the field of finance.
5. Target group
The course is designed for advanced level school leavers and the employees who are already engaged in the field of finance.
6. Entry requirements
Eligibility Requirements for Higher Diploma in Business Finance
Pass G.C.E. (Advanced Level) Examination in any stream or
Pass following examinations of any of the following institutions
- Level two of Association of Accounting Technicians in Sri Lanka (AATSL) or
- Level two of Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Sri Lanka (CMA) or
- Level one of Certificate of Banking and Finance offered by Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka (IBSL) or
- Level one of Institute of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) or
- Any other qualification acceptable to the senate of University of Kelaniya.
7. Course Structure and Curriculum
The Higher Diploma in Business Finance is awarded for students who complete 60 credits completing all course units. Students who earn 30 credits by completing all course units in first and seconds semesters have the exist route of Diploma in Business Finance.
*** Those who pass higher diploma can enter into 3rd year of bachelors degree (SLQL 5 and SLQL 6)

* Those who select Business project development must select Credit Management too and cannot select Internship in Business Finance. Students who elect Internship in Business Finance cannot enrol any other optional course units.
Application forms can be obtained either by visiting or by posting a payment receipt of Rs. 750/= to the Department of Finance, University of Kelaniya. The payment receipt should be paid to the account no: 055-1001-10667549 of People's Bank. Application forms can also be downloaded from the website. Completed applications should be accompanied with the Rs. 750 payment receipt to the above People's Bank account. Duly completed applications should be sent to the course coordinator, Higher / Diploma in Business Finance, Department of Finance, Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies, University of Kelaniya on or before 14th February, 2018.
