Aim                                        : To; provide the knowledge on fundamental concepts of financial management which are essential in making investment and financing decisions of an organization.

Learning Outcomes              : At the end of this course unit, students should be able to;

 

  • exhibit essential knowledge pertaining to the field of financial management equate for HR Managers
  • Identify the role of finance function and its linkage with the human resources management
  • describe and explain the importance of financial information for managers in making managerial decisions.

Course Content                    : Introduction to financial management; evolution of financial management, difference between financial management and accounting, finance functions, role of the financial manager, goals of financial management, agency relationships.  Time value of money; present value of cash flows, future value and present value of annuities, present value of perpetuities and growing  annuities, loan ammonization. Sources of finance; different sources of financing. Financial statement analysis; users of financial statement analysis, ratio analysis, trend analysis, inter-firm analysis. Cost of capital; cost of equity, cost of preferred stock, cost of debt capital, Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC). Capital budgeting; nature of investment decisions, accounting rate of return method, pay back and discounted payback period methods, Net Present Value (NPV) method, Internal Rate of Return (IRR) method, profitability index method, risk analysis in capital budgeting. Risk and return; investment returns, risk in a portfolio context. Budgeting; overview of budgeting, approaches to budgeting, preparing the cash budget. Valuation; bond valuation, stock valuation. Capital structure and leverage; capital structure, capital structure theories, business and financial risk. Dividend policy; objectives of dividend policy, constraints on paying dividends, stability of dividend, forms of dividends. Working capital management; concepts of working capital, operating and cash conversion cycle, determinants of working capital, managing current assets and liabilities.
