Aim                                         : To provide basic knowledge of the underlying principles of Sociology

 

Learning Outcomes : On completion of this course unit, students should be able to;

  • describe and explain the society and its behaviour
  • explain sociological perspectives
  • identify human’s social relationships at workplace
  • analyse organizational issues on sociological views
  • apply sociological theories for organizational purposes

 

Course Content :  Introduction to sociology; define sociology, define society, what  we can learn through sociology, history of sociology, founders of sociology, sociology and other social Sciences. Sociological theories; introduction, structural-functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic Interactionism, role theory, social constructionism, integration theory. Culture; define culture, components of culture, cultural diversity, subcultures and countercultures, ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism. Socialization; meaning of socialization, theories of socialization, agents of socialization, social communication, the self and socialization. Social groups; define social groups, types of groups, group dynamics, introduction to social networks, formal organizations. Social Stratification; define social stratification, forms of stratification, social mobility. Gender; define gender, gender vs. sex, gender discordance, biological differences of gender, social and psychological differences of gender, sexism; Social change; social change, factors of change, impact of technology change, social movements; Political and economic power; define power, meaning of political power, meaning of economic power.

The theme this time was ‘‘Peopling for Innovation’ that discussed particularly HRD issues at different performance contexts: corporates; industry; and national level.
