Aim                                         : To provide a fundamental knowledge in understanding human behaviour and basic theories in psychology.

 

Learning Outcomes : On completion of this course unit, students should be able to;

  • identify and describe the principles and the perspectives of basic Psychology
  • identify the importance of psychology for Human Resource Management
  • Apply Psychological theories for organizational purposes

 

Course Content : Introduction to Psychology; define psychology, history of psychology, importance of psychology, alternative subfields of psychology, psychology  and HRM. Structuralism vs. functionalism; define functionalism, founders of structuralism, paradigm of structuralism,  functionalism, founders of functionalism, paradigm of functionalism. Behaviorism;  define behaviorism, founders of behaviourism. Gestalt psychology; founders of gestalt psychology. Psychoanalytic school of psychology; define psychoanalytic theory, interaction of the Id, Ego, and Superego. Human resources management and psychology; functions of HRM and psychology. Perception; define perception, perceptual process, gestalt principles of perceptual organizations, maintaining perceptual constancy, perceptual effects, attribution theory, common attribution errors. Learning; define  learning, social learning theory, observational learning, the ‘Bobo Doll’ experiment, Stress; define psychological stress, types of stress, main causes of stress, symptoms of stress, stress coping strategies. Personality; define personality, theories of personality, ‘Erik Erikson’s Personal Development Theory’.
