Aim                                            : To; (i) develop basic mathematical knowledge of students, (ii) develop students’ analytical and decision making skills with the application of mathematical techniques learnt.

 

Learning Outcomes : On completion of this course unit, students should be able to:

 

  • identify the various mathematical methods required in managerial decision making
  • describe and explain the management issues using mathematical techniques
  • demonstrate critical thinking, modelling, and problem solving skills  required in the managerial capacity
  • solve problems in business using appropriate mathematical techniques.

Course contents                         : Fundamental algebraic concepts; sets, functions, operations. Arithmetic equations; simple, quadratic, simultaneous. Permutations and combinations. Binomial theorem. Exponential and logarithmic functions; index, exponential functions, logarithms. Progressions; arithmetic, geometric. Analytical geometry; gradient and intercept, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, equation of straight line, equation of circle. Calculus; functions, graphing the functions, limits of functions, differentiation, integration, maxima and minima, applications of calculus. Mathematics of finance ; simple interest,  compound interest, annuities. Matrix algebra; operations, applications.
