Aim                                         : To equip students with knowledge about the basic theories, skills, and concepts related to managerial communication enabling them to integrate theory and practice to improve communication both personally and in the workplace.

 

Learning Outcomes               : On completion of this course unit, the student should be able to;

 

  • demonstrate knowledge of communication theory
  • design letters, memos, and reports according to the format generally accepted in business
  • demonstrate the ability to use grammar and punctuation in writing and speech
  • demonstrate awareness of ethical issues in contemporary business communication
  • recognise the nonverbal signals that are being sent and received in interpersonal communication
  • analyze communication situations and audiences
  • listen effectively in the workplace and utilize principles of audience analysis to tailor messages to an audience

 

 

Course Content                     : Overview of managerial communication; what is communication, basic concepts in communication, misconceptions about managerial communication, personal language use and communication styles. The role of communication in contemporary organizations; how managers communicate, organizing and developing a message, communicating change, negative news communication. Effective writing; memo and letter writing, effective business reports, email drafting. Listening and nonverbal communication; effective listening skills, hidden messages managers send, understanding body language. One to one communication; interviewing skills and techniques, giving instructions and feedback, questioning techniques. Presentation skills; audience analysis, presenting to hostile audiences, introductions, conclusions, transitions, and summaries, developing and supporting main points, handling audience questions. Meetings, conferences, and small group communication; communication in teams, presentations in teams, conducting effective meetings and conferences. Selecting and using communication technologies; conveying job related information and strengthening interpersonal communication, choosing media, technologically mediated communication, telephone etiquette. The practice of managing by communication; corporate culture and communications, organizational structure, power and communication flow, giving feedback, conflict management, inter-cultural communication.
