Aim                                                     : To acquaint students with current international management theory and practice, and provide insight on the unique opportunities and problems that confront international managers.

Learning Outcomes                           : On completion of this course unit, the student should be able to;

  • Identify the key dimensions that shape management approaches in international organizations
  • evaluate cross cultural situations, and interact effectively in such encounters
  • examine how governments and legal systems affect international business
  • investigate the social, cultural and ethical roles of business in today’s global society
  • analyze, and justify assumptions made and conclusions reached for current international management issues.

 

Course Content                                 : Globalization and worldwide developments; what is international business, international management and globalization, their implications for the management of enterprises, the merits and drawbacks of globalization, differences in organizational behavior and management practices across countries. International business environment; assessing the political, economic, legal and technological environment, social responsibility and ethics. Cultural context of global management; meanings and dimensions of culture, major theoretical perspectives and frameworks underlying cross-cultural dimensions, cultural convergence versus divergence, cultural awareness, managing diversity, specific business strategies for the effective management of cultural diversity, best practice Vs best fit approaches in international management, Conflicts, negotiations and communication across cultures; the communication process, managing cross cultural communication, the negotiation process, negotiation styles, and decision making. Formulating and implementing strategy for international and global operations; reasons for going international, steps in developing international and global strategies,  global alliances and strategy implementation, organization structures and control systems for global operations, managing effective monitoring systems. Regional Economic Integration; international trade and investment, handling FDIs, understanding emerging markets. The Role of SME’s in international business.
