Aim                                         : To provide students with relevant knowledge  about the complexities in,  and issues and practices of managing human resources in the international context by international organizations.

 

Learning Outcomes               : On completion of this course unit, the student should be        able to;

a) understand the basic concepts encountered in international HRM

a) recognize the functional requirements of HRM in a given international organization

b) help people to manage cultural diversity in an international organization

c) develop awareness on trends in international HRM

d) develop the competency on analyzing IHRM issues in international organizations.

Course Content                     : Introduction to IHRM; define key terms in IHRM, Compare domestic and IHRM. Creating the international organization; different types of global organizations, stages of internationalization, mode of operation and HRM. IHRM and Culture; manifestations of cultural differences, culture shock, importance of cultural awareness. Staffing international operations; staffing approaches, International Assignments (IA). Recruiting and selecting staff for IAs; expatriate failure, selecting staff for IAs. International Training and Development (T&D); IAs as an important Training and Development tool, pre-departure training. International Compensation, complexities in global pay practices, objectives of international compensation, and key components of international compensation programmes. Re-entry and career issues; re-entry challenges, repatriation process and practices, repatriation programmes. IHRM in the host country context; balancing standardization and localization of HRM. International Industrial Relations; types of unions in the international business context, differences in MNE approach to international industrial relations. Performance Management; control and performance management, variables affecting expatriate performance. Trends in international HRM.
