Aim                                             : To; (i) develop students’ hard competencies to build a healthier,   motivated, committed and productive workforce and, (ii) to enable students to adopt a preventive approach in response to solve employee matters.

Learning Outcomes                  : On completion of this course unit, students     should be able to;

  • identify and describe the measure to be taken in the case of issues  relating to preventive HR
  • explain the impacts of HR preventive practices on the overall outcomes of organisations
  • propose the needed interventions relating to prevent issues in discipline management, grievance handling, welfare management, termination and dismissal of employees

Course Content                       : Introduction to preventive HR management; components and their relatedness, their contributions to organisation and its strategy.                                                Grievance and grievance handling; sources of grievances, company grievances handling procedures, guideline for handling grievances. Employee discipline and privacy; discipline and employees, formal disciplinary process, formal disciplinary appeals, discipline without punishment. Termination and dismissal. Employee health and safety. Employment relationships. Employee welfare management. Industrial democracy.

‘The 2nd National Summit on People Management 2017′ (NSPM 2017) organised by the Department of Human Resource Management of the Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies, University of Kelaniya was successfully conducted on the 12th of December 2017 at the Kingsbury, Colombo. The theme this time was ‘‘Peopling for Innovation’ that discussed particularly HRD issues at different performance contexts: corporates; industry; and national level. The specialty of this summit was that it congregated stakeholders from the academia, practice, policy-making process and postgraduate and undergraduate levels.
