Aims

:

To acquaint students with knowledge on basic concepts and skills needed in organizations to engage in better and productive communications in personal and professional encounters.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course unit, the student should able to,

  • understand the nature and scope of  the communication process and its role within the  organization
  • manage and enhance the communication process in the workplace
  • develop business correspondence skills
  • listen effectively  and give appropriate feedback
  • present themselves in public to build a career
  • write and speak clearly and concisely

Course Contents:

Overview of business communication, Interpersonal communication in organisations, Presenting yourself in public,  Presentation skills, Effective listening and giving appropriate feedback, Communication etiquette.

Method of Teaching and Learning:

Lectures, classroom discussions and activities, reading assignments, presentations, role plays, critiques, audio visual listening exercises, simulations.

Assessment:

Examinations, assignment reports, participation and organization of workshops, group and individual presentations, case study development and analysis, other communication skills evaluations

‘The 2nd National Summit on People Management 2017′ (NSPM 2017) organised by the Department of Human Resource Management of the Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies, University of Kelaniya was successfully conducted on the 12th of December 2017 at the Kingsbury, Colombo. The theme this time was ‘‘Peopling for Innovation’ that discussed particularly HRD issues at different performance contexts: corporates; industry; and national level. The specialty of this summit was that it congregated stakeholders from the academia, practice, policy-making process and postgraduate and undergraduate levels.
