The Department of HRM

About Us

Being established in 1995 with the founding of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, as Department of Accountancy & Human Resource Management, we have a long and proud history of producing graduates equipped with profound insight in catering to the needs of the Sri Lankan and the global business community. With the upgrading of the Accountancy Unit into a separate Department in June 1999, the mother Department was renamed as the Department of Human Resource Management.

The greatest strength of our Department is the highly qualified faculty, possessing esteemed qualifications, research insight and expertise in imparting knowledge. We offer the Bachelor of Business Management (Human Resource) Special Degree which is a 4 year degree program comprising of core subjects and electives. The curriculum of which is restructured regularly with a vision to incorporate knowledge based study and action learning, continuous competence enhancement, business practicality and disciplinary rigor. This is not simply a place of knowledge dissemination but we focus on moulding potential managers and corporate leaders through the Internship Programme and other enhanced opportunities for talent acquisition.

We have launched the bi–annual publication ‘Kelaniya Journal of Human Resource Management’, first of its kind by an Academic Department of the Faculty. It is a forum for intellectuals, providing opportunity for integration of diverse perspectives in business and social realities and has earned increased recognition from both industry and academia.

We are the first academic Department in the Sri Lankan higher education system to offer a Post Graduate Diploma in HRM. This qualification provides a cutting edge advantage as we have extended its scope from year 2010 by re-designating as a ‘Postgraduate Diploma in HRM leading to Masters’ in order to provide mastery to engage in knowledge driven corporate interactions.

The Department take pride offering the Bachelor of Business Management General (External) Degree Programme for external students commencing from 1999 and we have attracted a massive student base at present. It enables our external student population to contextualize knowledge to gain employment even if they have not been competent enough to obtain university entrance.

The origination of the Student Association – AHEAD - Association of Human Resource Escalation and Development – is a milestone in our devotion to produce prominent graduates with a strive to ‘make things happen’. The 3Ds Programme is the Annual flagship event of the Department which comprises of a series of events which sharpens the capabilities of the student community.
